There is something called implantation bleeding that occurs at the same time a women would be expecting her period. Not all women get this but some do. However, if you had a regular period and a negative hpt, i would say you are probably not pregnant. I'm sorry.
Some women do experience bleeding during pregnancy. A "normal period" consists of an egg being released. While pregnant, the hormones you release prohibit an egg from maturing and being released. What these women are experiencing is an anovulatory cycle. (Bleeding, but not ovualtion) and it isn't very common. There is also implantation bleeding, but many women don't get that either, or don't notice it. Usually its light brown, or pinkish and not enough to saturate a pad.
No, even if you are bleeding a little bit, it will not affect the result of the home test. The home test looks for about 25-50 miu of hcg, which is a hormone that is produced during pregnancy. This can usually be detected the day after you miss your period. It tests your urine, but if there is a little blood mixed in (whether you are pregnant or not) it will give you an accurate reading, as long as you follow the instructions on the test.
There are not many false positives in home tests (say your pregnant when you are not). But many false negatives occur from testing too early.
Hope this helps.
This is such a common question in medical practice (I'm an MD), so I'm going to give you the "user-friendly" answer. After the egg is fertilized by the sperm cell, this becomes a ball of cells called a Zygote and travels for 6 days up through the Fallopian tubes (growing larger as it doubles, triples and so on), enters the uterus and then implants into the wall of the uterus. It's at that time, a women will have blood loss as that embryo burrows into that rich surface. She then thinks it is a very light period, resulting in an office visit worried about not being pregnant. So your question is a good one because it allows for information and education about pregnancy!
