am about to start taking pregnacare, i have heard it is reallygood and hasall you need, has anyone elseused it

Answers:
I would definately recommend pregnacare. I'm a very fussy eater and i miss out on alot of the important vitamins, minerals and nutrients required during pregnancy. As you can imagine when i fell pregnant with my daughter (now 2 and half) i was really worried that she wouldn't get all she needed so i took pregnacare as the lady at the pharmacist recommended it. Anyway i had a very healthy baby girl born 10 days early weighing 7lbs 9oz. I was obviously over the moon that she was healthy, i've had another baby since, a healthy boy (now 10 months) who i also took pregnacare with, he weighed 8lb 4oz so another good weight, i'm also now 23 weeks pregnant again! Not planned let me reassure you! I'm very happy and once again am taking pregnacare

I have been recommended by my midwife/G.P. to take a supplement containing 400 mcg of folic acid per day, only for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Is it safe to take a supplement containing folic acid (like Pregnacare® ), after this time?

Why has Pregnacare® been developed?
During pregnancy, your baby is totally reliant on what you eat as their only source of nourishment. So even with a good diet, extra specific nutrients may be very important around the time of pregnancy. Pregnacare® has been specially formulated so mothers-to-be can safeguard their extra dietary requirement without confusion about which supplements to take. Pregnacare® contains a careful combination of 17 vitamins and minerals, including vitamin B12 and folic acid. Scientific evidence now shows these are essential to the development of your unborn baby. [Top]

When is Pregnacare® recommended?
Pregnacare® is recommended as soon as you start trying to conceive to help safeguard your nutritional needs before you find you are pregnant; throughout the whole of your pregnancy when specific nutrients are vital to the healthy development of your baby; and also whilst breast-feeding when extra demands are placed on your body. Pregnacare® can be used for as long as required, and can be started at any point during pregnancy. [Top]

What do I need to know before starting to use Pregnacare® ?
Pregnacare® has been carefully developed by a team of medical experts including highly qualified pharmacists and medical consultants, and is based upon solid scientific research evidence, as a nutritional safeguard for women from before conception, throughout pregnancy and whilst breast-feeding. Pregnacare® is a multivitamin and mineral dietary supplement formulated to safeguard the nutritional needs of mother and baby. Pregnacare® replaces your usual daily multivitamin. Your doctor may wish to prescribe an additional iron supplement after the 13th week of pregnancy, which may be taken with Pregnacare®. [Top]

Can Pregnacare® be used with other medicines simultaneously?
As a general rule, Pregnacare® can be taken alongside other medications because it contains only moderate levels of vitamins and minerals. However, if you are already taking prescribed supplements or medications, seek advice from your doctor or other health professional first. [Top]

How and when should Pregnacare® be used?
One tablet per day is recommended with or immediately after your main meal, with a full glass of water or a cold drink. Taking the tablet with a large meal maximises the absorption of the nutrients, and can reduce nausea which is sometimes experienced if multivitamins are taken on an empty stomach. Pregnacare® should only be taken on a full stomach. Always ensure that Pregnacare® is taken with plenty of liquid to wash down the tablet. We do not recommend chewing the tablets because they have not been formulated as chewable preparations. Chewable tablets usually include flavourings, sweeteners and/or added ingredients to help break the tablet up in the mouth. Pregnacare® tablets are suitable for vegetarians. [Top]

Are there any undesired effects whilst taking Pregnacare® ?
Pregnacare® has no known side-effects when taken as directed. Do not exceed the recommended tablet intake. In case of overdose, seek medical advice immediately. [Top]

What are the active ingredients?
Pregnacare® contains the following active ingredients per tablet: Vitamin D (200 IU) 5 mcg; Vitamin E 20 mg; Vitamin C 70 mg; Vitamin B1 3 mg; Vitamin B2 2 mg; Niacin 20 mg; Vitamin B6 10 mg; Folic Acid 400 mcg; Vitamin B12 6 mcg; Betacarotene 3 mg; Vitamin K 70 mcg; Iron 20 mg; Selenium 30 mcg; Magnesium 150 mg; Zinc 15 mg; Iodine 140 mcg; Copper 1 mg. Pregnacare® is free from artificial colourings, gluten, preservatives, fat and yeast. Pregnacare® is not tested on animals. [Top]

Some Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) levels are above 100%. Is this safe during pregnancy?
RDA levels are calculated to help prevent the most basic vitamin and mineral deficiency states. The levels contained in Pregnacare® are specific to normal requirements in pregnancy. This is why some levels of nutrients in Pregnacare® are higher than the RDA (e.g. folic acid, the recommended level is 200% RDA). Importantly, all levels are safe for pregnancy and well within upper safety guidelines for daily self-supplementation. [Top]

Does Pregnacare® contain Vitamin A (retinol), because excess may be harmful during pregnancy?
No. Pregnacare® has been carefully formulated to contain betacarotene in preference to vitamin A. Betacarotene (pro-retinol) is converted into vitamin A when and if the body requires it, and is non-toxic. [Top]

Why does Pregnacare® not include calcium, which is important during pregnancy?
Calcium is an essential mineral throughout pregnancy and breast-feeding. However it has not been included in the Pregnacare® formula, since it is not possible to include the right amount in one small tablet, and secondly calcium is known to inhibit the absorption of iron and trace elements. Rather than including just a token amount of calcium, Pregnacare® has therefore been designed so that it can be used with Vitabiotics' Osteocare® tablets or liquid. But for best results we recommend they are taken at separate times of the day, at least an hour apart. [Top]

I have been recommended by my midwife/G.P. to take a supplement containing 400 mcg of folic acid per day, only for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. Is it safe to take a supplement containing folic acid (like Pregnacare® ), after this time?
It is perfectly safe to take 400 mcg of folic acid per day throughout the whole of pregnancy. The U.K. Department of Health's Chief Medical Officer recommends that women planning a pregnancy should take a supplement containing 400 mcg folic acid daily, from the start of trying to conceive until the 12th week of pregnancy. Folic acid is vital during this period for the normal, healthy development of your baby's neural tube and nervous system. However, folic acid can be taken throughout pregnancy, not just up to the 12th week of pregnancy, since it plays other important roles later in pregnancy such as helping blood formation in both mother and baby. Folic acid on its own or within Pregnacare® may therefore be taken throughout pregnancy. Pregnacare® gives the advantage of not only providing folic acid, but other essential nutrients as well. [Top]

I can't speak directly about Pregnacare but on the advice of a professional healthcare advisor/dietition who was a former pregnancy specialist, I was suggested to take Jarrow Pregnatal + DHA. This is a 7 tabs a day complex system as her advice was that 1 little tab (which is pregnacare) can't as effectively supply all the nutrients of the Jarrow system. She said the growing foetus robs you of key nutrients: iron being the main one + fish oils (part of this system) are great for baby's brain + eye development. Supplements should never replace a healthy diet + lots of water is great in pregnancy too for your blood flow increases tremendously + it can sometimes be a thirst pang we feel not hunger (good to keep balance on pregnancy weight gain as hard work to loose it after). I had a fabulously healthy pregnancy + few troubles + now a beautiful baby girl. I continue to take it now as it's good for breastfeeding mums too. If you are in the UK they are sold via many sources if you websearch. One supplier which I use is The Nutri Centre on 020 7637 8436 they do mail order. Good luck & happy, healthy pregnancy! i used it for the 1st 3 months but not after that. my daughter is beautiful and healthy, very intelligent. it has everything rolled into 1 rather than having to take all separate vitamins as you cant take multi vitamins with iron or omega 3 by them selves due to the fact that they cross the placenta and go direct to the babies blood stream.

its very good even if you want to get pregnant it helps

Yes it is really good-- it has folic acid which is essential for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy also contains all the vitamins you need, especially to keep you going-- i found the first 12 weeks quite tireing on my body so it was nice to be able to have that little boost of energy.
