Answers:
Conception can only occur at ovulation, when an egg is released from the ovaries. Many women mistakenly think that they ovulate every month, and while some do, the majority of women ovulate every 2-3 months.
The best thing initially is to try and regulate your monthly cycle... embark on a healthy eating plan, take regular exercise... being overweight can seriously affect your periods and conceiving.
You can also buy over the counter ovulation kits too, but a lot of these depend on a regular cycle.
You will see a change in the cervical mucas just before you ovulate, this is designed to assist sperm in moving toward your egg when its released.
You can also detect ovulation through your own body temperature. Following ovulation, your temperature can increase by 0.5 to 1.6 degrees. You won't feel the shift but you may be able to detect it by using a basal body temperature (BBT) thermometer. This temperature spike indicates that you've ovulated. This is because releasing an egg stimulates the production of the hormone progesterone, which raises body temperature.
You're most fertile in the two or three days before your temperature rises. A few experts think you may have an additional 12 to 24 hour window of fertility after you first notice the temperature creep up, but most say at that point it's too late to make a baby.
It can take one to two days after ovulation for progesterone to build up enough to raise your body temperature. But since the egg can only survive for about 24 hours, at that point it's too late for fertilisation.
That's why some experts recommend that you chart your temperature (taken each morning) for a few months to detect a pattern and pinpoint your likely ovulation date. Then you can plan to have sex during the two to three days before the day your temperature normally rises.
Other experts believe that charting your temperature is of limited value and suggest that for most couples frequent and regular intercourse is the most effective way to maximise your chances. If there are doubts about the frequency of ovulation, these experts suggest that hormonal tests are more useful than temperature charting. Some women find temperature charting, along with assessing cervical mucus, useful. Others find it hard to detect any temperature changes.
You can still opt for assisted conception through IVF if you've been trying to get pregnant for 12 months and neither you or your partner have any medical reasons as to why conception is not happening. Sometimes, there is no explanation for infertility.
Your doctors will be best positioned to advise you in the long term.
Good luck.

Although stress does indeed have an impact on fertility, infertility is not a psychological problem. Relaxation techniques can be very helpful (yoga and meditation for instance), but the "relax and it will happen" advice can be hurtful to those suffering from infertility. Unexplained fertility does happen; it's a complicated cocktail of hormones in there, and the balance is easily upset.
I suggest seeing a specialist, if you haven't already. You might also consider acupuncture or herbal treatment. There are a lot of resources online.
Good luck.
