What, exactly, are the basic tests that a woman can have done to test for infertility?
Answers:
The tests for infertility usually start with blood tests. Blood is drawn on the third day of your cycle (cycle day 1 is the first day of your period). The blood tests are to check hormone levels of progesterone and estradiol. Your blood may also be tested on the 21 st day of your cycle to check progesterone levels.
The test for blocked tubes is called a Hysterosalpingogram (also just called HSG). Dye is injected through your cervix and into your uterus where it then flows into the fallopian tubes and out the ends (the tubes aren't really attached to the ovaries). If the dye doesn't come out, the tube is blocked. It's not common to have blocked tubes, but if it's possible if you've had previous infections.
As far as the male tests, the doctors usually prefer to have the male provide a sample at the doctor's office or clinic. If you live close by, they may permit you to take the sample at home and bring it in.
Since you're asking this question, I am assuming you are beginning the hopefully not long process of fertility testing. One thing you can do in the meantime is take your basal temperature. Get a digital thermometer that has good precision (drug stores sell ones for this purpose) and take your temperature at the same time every morning, as soon as you awake and before you even get out of bed. Chart your temperature and you will begin to see a pattern. Your temperature will be at more or less a constant level and then drop about 1/2 degree when you ovulate. Then it will rise about a degree and stay there for about two weeks. Then the temperature will drop just before or on the first day of your period. If the temperature stays high and never drops, then you could be pregnant. Taking your temperature like this will show if you are ovulating and will also help you see when the best time to have sex would be (right before you ovulate).
Good luck!
