The average life of a sperm is 3 days however there are "fringe sperm" that can survive for a week. The egg itself can only be implanted for a fairly short window of time but since sperm can wait around days for this window to open you have to be careful.
In fact, I've always thought it was weird that you'd have sex one night and it would be the next day (or two) that the actual egg/sperm meeting would occur. There you are innocently picking out apples and BAM now you're pregnant.
