My Toddler is 27 Months old, and still doesn't speak a single word. Should I start to get worried?
Answers:
It is a concern to an extent. Let your pediatrician know and see what he or she has to say.Doesn't hurt to ask and if there is a problem, you may do something about it early on. At this point its hard to say (obviously why you are asking the question). I would be concerned because that's what of the questions that we ask when students are having trouble in school (academic) The question we ask is "did your child begin to talk between 18-36 months?" So you may just have to be patient.
Other Answers:
i would be concerned. you should talk to your pediatrician. there may be an underlying problem, such as a hearing problem, etc.
be patient
I refused to talk until I was 2 and 1/2. I just felt people were stupid for not being able to understand me, so I stopped talking at 6 months.
No. Don't be overly concerned with it right now. He is really just sitting back and waiting for the appropriate time to let it all out. He's been taking notes and I'm sure that if you look under the pillow in his crib you will find a laundry list full of speeches that he has already written.
Give him another week and if he is still silent, hire Ryan Seacrest to baby sit for you.
Be patient for the time being. If you are truly concerned take him to the doctor...jus to dbl check on him...and ask the pediatrician, freinds, and family... what they would consider to be a normal age for a toddler to being speaking. don't get too worried...there are many 1 year old that hardly speak. sometimes...their jus shy.

I work in a child care center.
i would look in to it now rather than later, hey if you are wrong all the better, but if you are right better to know now.
After I read your question the first thing that popped into my mind was hearing loss. Please check his hearing. It may or may not be the problem. Best wishes and God Bless.
Don't worry.
I have 2 children - they develop at their own pace.
Einstein did not walk or talk until he was 4 !
This sin't really a question for a website full of random question answerers, but you know that. It could well be that there is nothing to be concerned about, but if I were you I would have this question addressed by a professional, such as your child's health care professional. If you don't have a regular family doctor contact your local health department about a hearing screen and some testing. My son was a late talker because his adenoids made him literally hard of hearing until he had his T&A and PE tubes at almost 2.
I would definitely take your little one to a pediatrician. I think the child should be tested for things such as hearing problems, developmental problems, etc. Don't get scared but DO get answers. The child should be speaking many words by now. Good luck and do get a doctor's appointment and an evaluation! One more thing, I have four kids (all grown). My first born daughter would speak for her brother all of the time. I, too was getting worried somewhat. Suddenly, he started speaking in paragraphs. He is now a Phi Beta Kappa with a PhD.....I wanted to throw that in just in case you have other kids around your child that are speaking for your little one.
if you are worried --- have your child's hearing tested... another reason children don't try to talk is someone is always handing them what they need without communicating verbally to the child. Reading to your child, and playing guess the color/shape, what does the animal say games, singing to the child and encouraging verbal responses will all help

talk to your peditrician. if he doesn't find anything medically wrong, ask if he would refer your son to a speech therapist for evaluation. my son was almost 3 and didnt say but a few words. (my son had some delays due to epilepsy and also has some sort of palate problem) but he was sent to a speech therapist and now after 6 months of ST he talks up a storm! The best thing to do at this point is address your concerns with his doctor. good luck! there is no certain guideline to go by-every child is different.

as a rule most 2 year olds do say at least 3-4 word sentences. (as i have been told by 2 nuerologists, 2 peditricians, all 5 of his therapist (2 speech, 1 physical, and 2 occupational) and several educational proffesionals.) But don't be overly concerned because he just may not be ready to talk yet. but it is better to get a jump on it now rather than later because it is harder on them later, especially as they near school age.
Of course you should be concerned!! It is not unheard of for a child to wait this long to start speaking. I know one little girl who didn't speak anything intelligible until she was nearly three and now at almost 5 she is incredibly articulate. However, why put yourself through the unnecessary worry and added trauma if you later discover there is a problem?? Go see a health professional and get some basic tests done - at the very least it will reassure you, in that you will discover whether you simply have to be patient or you need to take action. When dealing with a child's health, patience is never a virtue :-)
BE CONCERNED. I listened to everyone saying be patient and don't worry he is taking it all in. Deep down I knew there was something wrong but I made myself believe since no one else saw it, it wasn't there. Finally after crying myself to sleep for many nights because my husband wouldn't accept there was something wrong, I called a doctor and got a referal for a specialist turns out our son is on the high side of the moderate level of autism. Don't wait it could be his hearing or anything. The longer you wait the harder it will get for him if he has to have therapy or anything. Help your son get him checked. Goodluck and my prayers are with you.
Kids all learn at different ages. Was he/she a premie? I'd check with the doctor though. Some kids don't talk and then all of a sudden they are saying everything like they've been saving it up. Do you talk to them a lot? Play them music? Let them watch some TV? I only have one child and he learned everything fast. I talked to him all of the time even in the buggie at the grocery store when he was little. Actually I started talking to him while still in the womb. You probably have nothing to worry about. One say soon, you'll be saying hush little baby, give it a rest.
Iwas concerned about my son then he finaly started talking at three years so be patient it takes time he will start.
I would be a bit concerned. If your son has an older sibling, often they will speak for the younger one. If that is not the case, you should speak to your doctor and get his hearing checked. Also, if necessary you can get some speech and language services to help get him on track.

See a doctor now! There are many medical and physicological reasons and the best answer is definitely NOT from here.
yes i would take him to a hearing dr. or something. my child at 2 would never be quite. I couldn't understand him sometimes but he talked.
OF COURSE you should be concerned. But does he say anything, even babble, or is he mute? Does he mom and dad yet? Depending on how severe this is, he should be checked out by a professional. If he is mute, then he needs a thorough ear and throat exam. If he just mumbles unintelligible nonsense, maybe he needs a speech therapist. Check out Early Intervention, a totally free service no matter how much money you make. They do evaluations and therapy for children under three. Do not wait!
