How do I control temper tantrums in 16 mth old?

My son just turned 16 mths old here in March. In the past week, he has started to through temper tantrums. He will through himself on the ground, arch his back, and kick his legs. My pediatrician has suggested ignoring them and placing him in his room until the tantrum subsides. What should I do? I get so embarrased and frustrated.

Answers:
My son did the same thing, he will be 17 months in a few day and we too just let him have his fit. What he is getting frustrated with is communication. I read an article that if you get eye level with him and speak in a normal voice, tell you don't understand what he wants can he tell please stop and tell you. It really worked. He walked me to the bathroom for his toothbrush, or walked me to the pantry for a snack. He just wants to communicate and he gets mad because no one understand him.

It's a game with kids to see how much they can push you. Don't you remember your childhood?
Get a spray bottle fill it with water, when he acts up, just go spray him once in the face and walk off. It's a shocker, but hurts no one. Correct his actions immediately, if you don't he will continue to control you for the rest of your life.

Try redirecting your toddler.....small children throw tantrums when they are frustated...so find somthing that will change his/her mind, by redirection. I use a spray bottle on my Dog, never on my kid.
And another poster told you to "smoke a joint"... geez.
What great parents they are I bet. I also bet they have little monsters for kids, and they don't know why.

You should ignore tantrums in a kid so small. You can NOT reason with them. Do not get on the floor with them, do not pay any attention to them at all. Let them have their tantrum, and when they figure out it's not working, then they will stop. Screaming will not hurt them.
They are doing it for a reaction, and any reaction is what they want. They want to see what buttons they can push on you. Don't let them.
