Are Kumon workbooks good birthday gifts for 4 year olds?

I think the Kumon teaching methods (http://www.kumon.com) are better than many other ones and their junior workbook set for preschoolers, e.g. My First Book of Tracing and My Book of Rhyming Words, are very suitable for these little ones.

But are they good birthday gifts for 4 year olds? Will parents think they are silly? Kids would need some parents' help to follow through on the exercises (not a whole lot once they get going on it). Would this be a bad idea for busy parents?

I'm sure they're great, but I really would discourage getting those as a gift. As you said, the parents might not have the time or see the importance of something like that, and the 4-year-old is definitely not going to get excited over them. It might hurt your feelings to see the reaction when they opened the package (4-year-olds aren't notorious for their sense of decorum, after all!). It's a very nice and thoughtful idea, but I would go for something the birthday child could actually enjoy -- birthdays are all about fun!
Mom would be happy, but a 4 year old wouldn't like it. Or work in it. I personally think thats a terrible teaching method, giving a kid a workbook and letting him go at it. Maybe a gift certificate, talk to his/her parents, and if they think the kid has too many clothes/toys, send a check for his/her college savings fund...make the parents happy.

Personal experience, I looked into Kumon for my daughter...
If you want to give a book, give a fun book that a four year can enjoy. Better yet, lighten up and give the child art toys, Legos or whatever the child likes. Do you want to know what is wrong with the parents today? It is this constant pushing, earlier and earlier, for children to become little scholars. Let your kids be kids and they will be happier, smarter, well adjusted adults. I have raised two wonderful, successful children, now ages 21 and 25. Let your children enjoy being who they are when they are.
