Our 20-month-old says exactly 1 word.?

His hearing is fine and he has no physical problems that might inhibit speech. Many info sources point to possible Autism. Thoughts, anyone?

Answers:
You've really got me trying to figure out what the one word your baby says....anyway, they say Einstein didn't speak until he was past two years old. It sounds like the doctor has given your baby a complete physical , and a clean bill of health. If you haven't already, you may want to take him to an autism specialist for evaluation. I know this all really weighs on you, but whatever is going on ,it's definitely not your fault ,and an answer will be found.

It does sound like Autism. Look for other signs of Autism though (sorry can't think of the others off the top of my head)

I have psychology books

All children develop at a different rate. My son was late walking because when he pulled himself up he just kept going. He climbed everything. Is your child developing in other areas instead or distracted to other activities? Don't worry too much yet. If it's only the speaking issue, it may not be autism. Some kids are just slow at certain stages. I know this is not the thing to hear when you are worried, but once he starts talking, you will wish he would stop! =)
If this is still an ongoing issue in 6 months, I would get him checked.

I know a couple of kids who didn't talk until they were nearly 3! their mothers were frantic, but time showed them it was ok - when they did start talking, they were already very good at it, it's like they practiced mentally instead of physically, I dunno. Anyway, don't worry, I'm sure he's fine, you've been doing everything right. Do you insist he speak? As in, "you can't have a cookie unless you say cookie"? Obviously, you can't do that with meals but "extras", insist on speech.
Autism? It's possible, take him to the doctor, it's better to catch it early. I think he just might be stubborn.

DO'NT WORRY, WAIT WHEN HE'S 7 AND IS DRAGING AROUND A ROTTEN SLICE OF WATERMELON AND NAMES IT BOB Silly Lilly, have patience your child will come along just fine. If you pay attention to ppqna.com you will see that supposedly mature adults cannot spell, most of the teenagers cannot put together a coherent sentence and the most popular word in the English language is "like". So don't worry you will have plenty of time to wish that at some point in time your child will stop talking and give you some peace and quiet.

My son did not start speaking until he was 3 years old. I have taken him to specialist and they tell me he is fine. Some kids develope different than others. Just give him some time. Boys also take longer to communicate than girls. Also if more than one language is spoken at home, boys can get confuse and take longer to talk. don't worry be patient and give him time to develop at his own pace. He is fine.

Many children do not speak at this age. Every child is different. If he has had his hearing tested and has no physical problems, relax. Maybe he is not talking because you are trying to hard to get him too. Some children do not talk because they do not have too. They have older siblings who jump right in and speak for them if they can not communicate for themselves...He will speak in his own good time. Ask us when he is three, when is he going to shut up.

I think my daughter was two before she uttered any word at all, and she developed just fine!. However, if you are concerned about autism, there are other signs to look for:

making infrequent eye contact,
passivity,
a decreased activity level at 6 months of age followed by extreme irritability,
a tendency to fixate on objects,
reduced social interaction,
lack of facial expression.
not smiling in response to smiles from others

go with your gut instinct in this.

Does he use a pacifier a lot? If he has something in his mouth all day then he won't try any harder to talk. Do you talk to him? Is he in a nursery/playschool where he can interact with children of his own age? 20 months is a bit long not to be talking but is he very shy? Still, he should be talking to you. Check it out with your pediatrician. there may be that the child is not around other kids in fact i have a three year old that is in the same condition and enrolled my son in the program called first steps that help your child with their speech problem once a week and at the most twice a week and you can enroll your child at parents as teacher if you will like more info email me at mrs2real4u@yahoo.com so don't feel alone this is just some things kids go through and if you will like more about

My 20 month old nephew has exactly one word: Is. He says it when pointing to the dogs, his mom, the coat rack, everything. When he was born he had a "funny foot" and strained neck muscles that need physical therapy to correct. He is also very tall and very lean (90th %tile in height, 30th in weight). My theory is all his development has been to overcome his physical problems and to grow, thus the speech development has been sort of put on the back burner.

I (and his mom and dad) really want him to talk; but for now I just think it's fun to have him as a baby for just a little longer.

Take care.

You know they said the same thing about my son. and now he is a complete chatter-box. with no signs of autism.
Check your county for early intervention program in your area.
it helped my son. They set him up with a speech therapist that came out onced a week and is paid through medical assistance.

Also, I made homemade magnets and stuck it on my refrigrator and objects in my home. "I showed him everyday which do you want from here" using the magnets. then i would label the magnet he picked.

if anything else, try double talk. it's dad-dad would you like milk-milk. consistent repetition.

good luck.

My son did everything advanced and suddenly at two and a half years old stopped talking completely. He was finally diagnosed with Autism and after three and a half years he now speaks more, reads and uses sugn language. For your children's sake you may want to speak to your pediatrician they can direct you further if they suspect Autism or Aperger's Disorder.

is your child ahead of himself in other areas ?? They can only learn so much at a time... Children will talk when they are ready, my 4 year old did not really start talking untill she was a little over 2 in a half, there is nothing to worry about.

There is a program called Early Intervention which is paid for through your tax dollars. If you can't find them in your phone book, call your local school district, the program may be under a different name in your area. This program is for children up to the age of 3. A social worker comes to your home to see if evaluation is necessary. Once that is determined, a speech pathologist and special ed teacher will come to your home and interact with your child by playing games with him and observing his actions and reactions. You will also be asked a battery of questions about his development, birth and health. If further help is needed, they will write up an action plan and you will be eligible for the necessary services. I went through this with my now 3 1/2 year old. She also wasn't saying much at 20 mos. They came and determined that her receptive skills were fine and that the words would come (and they haven't stopped!) Don't jump to the conclusion that it is autism. If you truly feel that it is, take him to the pediatrician and express your concerns. Good luck.
