My daughter is 2 1/2 years old and doesn't talk much. When does a child really start talking?

She can say the usual words: but when you ask her to say something that she can't she just laughs.

Answers:
That sound pretty normal. As long as she understands you and shows normal development in social circumstances, I wouldn't worry. If she sometimes seems "off in her own world" or does things like flap her hands/arm to entertain herself, or arranges things obsessively, I would suggest seeing a doctor as these can be signs of pervasive developmental disorder (which includes the rarer form autism.)
If that doesn't seem to fit your child just remember all kids develop at different rates (I am sure you've heard that a thousand times) My 2 year old son speaks clearer than my four year old twins and they have no development problems.

Things that can help:

don't use baby talk.
read. point out pictures ask what they see, etc.
sing. try the same song for several days
repeat. This is a cup. Do you want a cup. Here is your cup. Do you like your cup.
speak slowly and with short simple sentences
maintain good eye contact when speaking
name body parts while bathing or dressing
run an all day commentary on what and why you are doing things
find things she is interested in as children tend to learn these words first. For my kids it was animals.
Most importantly never correct your child. If they say wawa just respond "that's right water"

At three you can contact your local school district and they will provide some one to evaluate her, to see if she needs speech therapy or behavioral therapy. I believe it is called early intervention. My nephew starts his therapy this week. If she qualifies it should be free.
sounds like my son just keep talking to her but about 3 her communication skills will improve

being social around other children helps too
Some children start late others early. I bet you will have your daughter speaking before Christmas. It is so crazy but that is how some children are they wake up one morning and have such a wonderful vocabulary. It is already in her you will have her talk real soon. Make sure you read to her. That is a great help
