Hitting your head hurts. Right now, it is getting your son something he wants. Attention at the time he bangs his head or later, even a distraction from something else going on.
Replace the behavior with another. When I leave the house, if my daughter is starting to cry, I tell her to call me on the phone. She calls (the babysitter dials) as I stand there and I talk to her on the cell phone as I get into the car and drive to work. This gets pretty boring for her after a couple of minutes and she is off to play.
As for banging the door with his head, practice playing knock knock with his hands. Open the door and say BOO when he knocks properly. Make it a game. Then warn him when you go to your room. "Mommy's going to her room and she's closing her door for privacy (my 3 year old knows that word-good for potty training). If you need me, just knock." At first, the knocks will be often, as your son tests out his new skill. It will taper off, though. If he bangs his head, say " Mommy is waiting for you to knock with your hands" Open as soon as he does.
Believe me, no one wants a sore head. He just needs the skills to take the place of head-banging. He does not need to see a doctor.
