Does your child have Amblyopia?
Answers:
I believe whether surgery is prescribed depends on why a child has amblyopia in the first place. If it's a muscular problem, I think it can be resolved through surgery. If it's a neurological problem, like my son's is, surgery hasn't been perfected to the point that it can help now. Our five-year-old also has amblyopia and is patched over the stronger eye to help make the weaker one work harder to catch up. He must also wear glasses. We've been told his eyes may even out strength-wise, but that he'll need glasses until laser surgery is invented to fix his condition. It's my understanding that if treatment doesn't occur at all by about age 7, a child can lose all vision in that eye.
I can understand your nervousness about surgery, but the type that can be resolved through surgery usually has a better prognosis. Good luck!

actually, i had it when i was little, i had to have surgery too, it will hurt, but only for a little while, and he may sitll have to wear glasses, h e might not ever be able to wear contacts, but i do so he will be ok, especailly if u have a good doctor
Yes. My 16 year old had that at the same age. The trick to patching is to patch both eyes alternately. What happened to my son is when we would patch the good eye, it would cross when we took the patch off. So we started patching the bad eye for one day, and the good eye for one day. It worked fine.
The eye doc told us the same thing about surgery, but he never needed it. Just keep watching your son and get a second or third opinion if you're not comfortable with what your doc is saying.
