He's self comforting. Talk with him about what is going on in his life and let him know you are there for him. Don't worry, it will pass, it did with my kids.

There is a nail polish that is made to discourage nail biting that tastes REALLY bad. If you put it on his thumb nails it should help slow it down. (its clear)
ah, that's okay...sorta. I had the same problem when I was younger. What i would suggest it putting something bitter or really bad tasting on his thumb before he goes to bed every night. That way the moment he starts sucking his thumb he'll wake up and check himself. My parents did this to me and it worked!
P.S-Chilli powder works really well too!
i had the same problem but it was me not some one else my aunt told me to try sucking another finger and it won't feel right and you'll stop my brother puts his middle finger and his wedding ring finger together and sucks them and he's not ashamed he does in public like no one sees him it's soooooooo embarrassing and he's 10 about to be 11 in December

If it is any consolation, just look up the Italian Football player Francesco Totti. On June 26, Totti sucked his thumb in front of the whole world after scoring the winning goal against Australia in World Cup 2006!

On a different note, talk to a counsellor about ways to stop this habit.
there is a nail polish called the thum or something like that, it's horrible. i've only been able to find it at walgreens. if that doesn't work try tobasco sauce.
try these things
put mittens on hands
hot sauce on the finger(s)
nailpolish
