Having a hard time getting 2 year old to brush teeth?

Is there an easy way to get a 2 year old to brush his teeth? I have tried everything I know how..It's getting to the point to where I have to hold him down and brush his teeth myself.

Answers:
Have you tried to use flavored toothpaste on him?!.....or maybe made him use a toothbrush with his favorite cartoon character on it?!!.....These are some ideas that would work....You've got to make it fun for your kid....It's got to be very colorful so as to get his attention. Another thing that you could do is that, you could brush your teeth with him.He has to see that mommy is doing the same thing and she looks like she's having fun.Create a song from "brushing your teeth" time.Be creative as much as you can.

Other Answers:
Stand behind him/her and sing a song that goes along with brushing teeth... make anything up!! Kids don't know the difference! Or just use a regular kids song like "Mary Had a Little Lamb".

That's what always worked for me as a little kid... my mom always had to sing a song to me and I'd hum along while I brushed.

Another good idea is to brush your teeth while they brush to show him/her that it's "grown-up" to brush.

do 2 year old have teeth ,if so they cant be that many .you still have a long time to teach him that ,dont be to fanatic. And if you hold him down ad force him you may put him off of brushing his teeth forever .
teach him in a fun way .let him see you brush your teeth and get him to copy that dont force a kid anything especially a 2 year old ,you sound like a fascist mother ,Glad you are not my mother

try a bribe. Tell him if he brushes his teeth before its time to goto bed, he might have extra time for a bedtime story. obvously you don't want him to know its a bribe, but if you word it right, it will sound like he will have extra time for the story that he wouldn't normally have because he is brushing his teeth. dunno how well this will work on a 2 year old, but it worked with my 3 year old niece when i wanted her to help clean her room.

Also, try a diffrent toothpaste. I know when i was little i hated the mint toothpaste bacause it burnt my mouth.

good luck!

****by the way byderule..... some baby's are born with teeth. and most children have all there baby teeth before they are 1 1/2. The only time i have seen a child that was 2 without teeth was because their irresposable parents let them have bottles and pacifires all the time and it prevented the teeth from coming in. so please know what you are talking about before you answer next time*****

I had the same prob with my son when he was younger. I tried to make it fun, I forced it, I threatened, everything I felt like u did. What finally worked was I told him about a true story about this boy I was in school with in 5th grade & his teeth were green, literally. I explained this was a result of the kid not brushing his teeth (don't really know what was wrong with the kids teeth) & that he was sad all the time b/c all the kids in school made fun of him & his teeth. Everytime it was time to brush his teeth, I brought up the story again & reminded him of the consequences for not brushing. I also found pics on line of people's smiles that had probs. I don't remember what sites they were but I searched gum disease pics or something like that & finally found some awful pics & used that as an example of what his mouth would look like if he didn't brush & brush the right way. He was 4, maybe going on 5 when I had this prob so regardless of the small age diff, it could be worth trying. I also had our family doc to talk to him. My son doesn't have a father in his life so when I needed help with someone talking to him about taking care of himself like a little man should & we would have a check up or something, I talked to our doc & he would talk to my son & explain certain things a young man should do like brushing teeth. Since he was familiar the our doc & he was a man that very well may of helped alot too. Good luck! My son never wanted to have his teeth brushed when he was 2 either, hes only 3 now and we have no problem. My husband and i would have to hold him down too. We'd tell him no t.v, or no toys or no whatever until he or we brushed his teeth. It was a constant battle, but what isn't when they are 2? Hes cool with it now, maybe because i told him worms would grow in his mouth. lol, hes young enough to beleive my lies, so why not use it to my advantage. some day hell be 13 and know everything, and everything i say will be either retarded or wrong.

I know what you mean! Mine would scream like he was being tortured whenever I tried to brush his teeth. But what can you do? At two they can't really do it too well themselves.
Here's my latest trick, and it seems to work a treat. I put on his fave Video and usually he's so engrossed in watching it he lets me brush his teeth. It's all over before he even realises I'm brushing them!

the louder they scream the easier it is to clean their teeth, i am lucky my 3year old loves getting his teeth cleaned and has done since he was 7 mths old when the first teeth came through also make sure they get their six monthly visit to the dentist,

mum to a 3 year old and a dental nurse Make sure you have a tooth paste and brush that he likes. My 15 month old loves the tooth paste we have for her and can't wait to get her teeth brushed during the day or night. Also try a teeth brushing song if you can't find one, make it up. Just keep enforcing him to do it morning and night to get a GOOD HABIT going! DO NOT think you have a lot of time to teach him, it isn't a matter of teaching him it is a matter of getting him in the habit. Or if all else fails, keep holding him down and tell him that if he doesn't do it himself that you have to do it for him like a baby. If he is the type that wants to be a "big boy" he will not like this!

both of you brush your teeth together--get a little chart and hang it by the sink--put a sticker on it every time he brushes his teeth, the reward him with something small after a week or every two weeks or however you want to do it

I have 2 year old twins and I had the same problem. One day they watched Daddy and thought it was the neatest thing to be ALLOWED to actually SPIT!!! Didn't have any more trouble after that. Especially with my son.
