3 yr old only eats in the morning!?

Is my 3 yr old OK? she only eats in the morning and early afternoon. She will not touch dinner, no matter WHAT it is!!!! What do I do? She is eating healthy (lots of fruits, veggies, whole grains, and more good stuff) that isn't the problem. Thanks for your help!

Answers:
Kids have this amazing appetite/weight control. They only eat when they are hungry. You only see obese children when the parent or guardian force the child to eat when they don't want to, or if there is a medical condition.

As long as she checks out ok at her dr. visits (not too small, not thriving, etc.) be happy that her natural, healthy eating habits are intact.

I agree with the previous poster about making sure she isn't filling up on juice and milk. While those are great for kids, one cup of juice per day is sufficient. Water is the best drink for children throughout the day.

My 2 1/2 year old does the same thing. The doctor told me that at this age they will eat if they are hungry. It's just a stage. Don't worry about it.

Maybe she likes breakfast food more than any other food. This is understandable considering how fun breakfast foods can be! Maybe you can try to "jazz" up the other meals by putting a little bit of breakfast into each meal. Maybe you can offer breakfast foods as a dessert after a small meal of lunch and dinner foods. Kids sometimes unconsciously give us the message that they only want to deal with a certain kind of food. If that is the case, try to be creative in getting them to eat other foods!

Good Luck!

Just have healthy food available, kids will not starve themselves. My kids went through stages at 2 & 3 they would eat/snack all day but wouldn't eat a full meal. We still had them set at the table with us for dinner. Now they are 6 & 4 and eat at regular meal times.
Good luck and try not to worry so much. (yea right easy to say)

my daughter is just turned 4, and she is still like this ,however she is very good at eating fruit and veg, oily fish & wholegrains etc ,its allhealthy stuff i feel that if she is hungry she will eat, she never starves and she has a very well balanced diet so i dont worry about her too much. think about the size of their little stomachs compared to ours if she is a healthy weight range and developing properly and healthy etc then dont worry too much , dinner time for a 3 yr old is also late in the day for them so they are perhaps tired and thats why they do not like a big meal then.

myself I have a 4 year old that does the same thing. She's usually only good for one good meal a day. We just make sure that she's eating healthy when she does eat and very limited snack in the afternoon...apple slices or veggies or something. As long as the child is growing and eating healthy don't worry too much about it. Just make the most of the times when they want to eat.

Going through it too!

Cod liver oil is said to be boosting the appetite of children, have you tried it?It's some kind of a natural oil that is extracted from a coldwater fish called cod..

My son was doing the same thing so I just made breakfast shorter. I did not starve him I let him eat then threw away what he did not finish instead of letting him eat and play all morning.
