Surgery for Urinary Reflux?
Answers:
My 5 year old daughter had this surgery coming up to a year ago(so she was 4 at the time of surgery). She was on Bactrim for about 6 months, which didn't help because she landed in the hospital with Ecoli posioning form the bactria in her kidneys. She had the surgery in May of last year and it was hard the first couple of days but if asked I would do it all again. Since she's been great no medication has been needed and she's only had one urinary tract infection within this whole year. I think it was totally worth it beacuse I don't know about your child but even on the Bactrim she had every single side effect. Hang in there and all will be fine. By the way every chid with Reflux is different not all of them grow out of it. If Batrim isn't working and there is still infections occuring then the best thing is surgery it's never a doctors first choice, I know it wasn't my doctors but when the kidneys are at danger it's the best choice. Ask your doctor every questions you have and leave no doubts. Good Luck!

I'm surprised they are doing surgery this early. Are you going to a Children's Hospital?? I have 2 daughters with this disorder. They only observed them for about 5 years, one of them had a grade 4 also. They did semi-annual tests and scans and they had to take preventive rx's for this time, but slowly they have grown out of it. If you aren't seeing a Children's Hospital Dr. I would highly suggest it.
I'm surprised, too.
My two daughters have this problem, and we watch them carefully, give them Bactrim every day, and expect that they will likely grow out of it by the time they're 5. Oh, and one of my daughters had not one but two breakthrough infections while on the meds, and no one's talking to us about surgery.
I've also heard that the grade of reflux doesn't mean much in little kids. It can change--get worse, get better--and it doesn't mean much in terms of prognosis or symptoms.
I'd get a second opinion. For sure. I mean, why put your kid through that if there are easier ways to prevent complications and they're likely to outgrow the underlying condition on their own? I am surprised they are doing surgery first. My daughter has the same thing and her doctors said there is a new procedure where they dont cut you open. they use a needle and inject collegen in the tubes. It is less invasive, less complications and a one day stay. This is what I will opt for for the time comes. Go to a medical website and do research first. Or ask your doctor about it. My daughter is 26 months and grade four and on Furdantin and we are even considering surgery yet so I would definatly do the research first and consider all your options. Good Luck!!
