My toddler is having infrequent bowel movements?

She is a healthy 2 yr old. She eats fruits & veggies every day. She drinks water every day. She drinks juice, but doesnt really care for milk. She will go every day, then every other day, then it will stretch to 4 or 5 days, then start all over. I asked the pediatrician, but was only told as long as she isnt in pain & there is no blood when she does go that there is nothing to worry about & to give her pear juice. I really need more advice than that

Answers:
I know what you are going thru. My 2 1/2 year old has been on laxatives for over 1 year. My pediatrician said that it is normal for children not to go every day. But, when it gets to be 4 - 5 days and no BM there is a problem. We started out using Benefiber, per our pediatricians advice, about 1 - 2 teaspoon per day in his milk and that worked for us for just a while. Benefiber won't hurt a child because it is all natural. A lot better than prescription drugs. Plus you can get it anywhere. Good luck.

FYI - Milk makes a child constipated.

Other Answers:
Maybe she is consuming too much iron and that can make her constipated.

No one, especially children, should go 4 or 5 days without pooping. Take her to another doctor, this one doesn't know what he's talking about. It depends on what the stools look like, are they hard little balls or is it soft? If they are hard, then she must be constipated and just doesn't complain about it. 2 years old is young to be explaining all of what they are feeling. Find out what foods contain the most fiber, and load her up on them. If she turns out to be constipated, the pediatrician can give her a laxative that you can mix in her juice. Good lucK!

I had a similar experience with one of my children, and it has lasted for years. Regardless of how close I watched the diet, there are still bouts of severe constipation. . .I mean to the point that the child is totally blocked up and doubled over in pain and we have to use a prescription laxative. The doctor explained to me that sometimes there can be subconscious reasons for it. . .so now, we monitor the regularity more closely, as well as the diet.
Since you're already doing well with the diet and the monitoring AND child is still young enough to train, maybe you could make a game out of going "poo"? I know it sounds silly, but just trying to think of ways for you to avoid what I've gone through and break through any early subconscious hinderance.
Make a calender and get special stickers for every time your child goes. . .if she goes "X" amount of days per week, then she gets (what ever you feel is an appropriate treat). Make a big deal about adding the stickers to the calendar and get her involved in it. Then she'll see that going poo isn't so bad! Good luck, I hope this helps.

My 2 year old has had this same problem for at least a year. She will get so constipated there will be blood along with her bowel movement. Her pediatrician recommended giving her apple juice daily to ensure regularity. It hasn't been a problem since as long as she drinks some daily. However, if she drinks more than 2 glasses daily, she gets diarrhea which is quickly resolved by giving bananas. As long as she's not getting constipated and she's not in pain, it's okay. Some kids just aren't as regular as others. My mom said my bowel movements were all over the place. I got constipated a few times but I turned out okay.
