What is the best age to start teaching children a second language (English is their first language). Thanks !

We'd like to know when it is best to begin. Prior to when they fully grasp English, or is earlier better ?

Answers:
As soon as they are born.....my twins have heard english and spanish since before they were born

My boyfriend is mexican and speaks nothing but spanish to them...which they reccomend and I'm excited to see if their first words will be in english or spanish. When they are little their minds are like sponges and absorb everything you say. Do it now because it is harder the older they get.

Read them books even when they cant talk, in both languages.

And no it wont confuse them. They will know which language to use with which people. Pretty neat huh! Kids are a lot smarter than we think. Good luck!!

Other Answers:
When they are pre-verbal.

The earlier the better. I would say as soon as they start to talk.

We learn language best before age 7. If you can expose your child to another language then, you should.

I learned both German and English from infancy up...I think the earlier the better!

Personal experience.

My cousin is Greek, she started with her children as soon as they started talking. Its so cute to hear a 2yr speaking both Greek and English. I think it's wonderful that you plan on teaching your children two languages! The earlier the better. Very young children learn languages easier than older children.

they say the earlier the better, like when they start saying mommy and daddy .

I think simultaneously works well. Many of my friends had their Spanish speaking family child-tend when their children were young, and the children learned both equally well.
What is important though is to make sure they have a good knowledge of a foreign language by the time they are about 12 years.
In the 60's we had Spanish all year in 4th grade.
I have read that there is a chemical in the brain that depletes as children get older that somehow affects the memory capability for languages.
It made sense to me!

well i learned 2 languages at the same time so get teaching! right away, the sooner the better.
just make sure they recognize the difference between the languages

The earlier the better, as people say. My wife and I discussed teaching our kids my wifes first language (she speaks several so we could have realy gone to town on the kids) but we decided, in the end, to let them just learn english. The earlier the better. Kids at a young age absorb things like learning a second language like sponges.
