How does your 3 yr old color?

My child went from a scribble, to coloring in the lines quite well to coloring one little thing and being done. The first two steps were expexted. I know how a child learns to color. The 3rd however? I mean she will pick a pic., color one shoe, and say shes done. She will go to a totally new page. I won't correct her b/c I feel she should choose how she wants to color. However, when I get a book all the pgs have a little something on it. Does any other child do this? Do you have any thoughts as to why? And are there suggestions on how to gentally guide her without her relizing my intent?

Answers:
My daughter used to do that, she's 5 now. What I told her was that the color was getting lonely and it needed some friends. it seemed to work. She still does it every now and again. I don't mind to much anymore because she has lots of coloring books. Before it was more of wasting paper issue.

My daughter goes in spurts like that too. She will color a nose, or a hand of something...one day she blew me away with coloring all the petals of a flower staying in the lines. If she doesn't color a whole lot on the page I usually say, "you should color some more over here", or if it's a picture of a 'clown', say, "the clown wants you to color his nose". Is this what kind of answer your looking for?

Enjoy the fact that she is colouring on colouring books and not on herself, like my boy does. My boys is still scribbling, sometimes on paper but most of the time on my brand new furniture!!!!

ARRRRGGHHHH

Mother of two boys, 32 months and 10 months. My daughter, who's 3, started out coloring just a little on a page and said she was done. Then she went to coloring all over the page. Now she's coloring in the little things very carefully, then broad strokes over the rest of the page. It seems every other time we get the crayons out, it's a little different.
