Is there a way to know if a baby/toddler will be left or right-handed?

Answers:
Not really. Most children will use both hands depending on what they are doing. They might eat with the left and draw with the right. But you can try putting the spoon or crayon on the table instead of in their hand and see which hand they prefer to use.

Other Answers:
We give our toddler crayons and spoons and such and observe what hand she generally uses to color and eat.

Just watch as the baby plays and you will figure out the dominant hand.

with a toddler you can leave their spoon IN THEIR FOOD and let them choose which hand. another way to tell with a toddler is to roll a ball to them and tell them to kick it. you will kick with your left foot if left handed, right foot if right handed.

with babies... they are interchangeable though.

Yes. See what hand they use to reach for things and if that doesn't work get a really -really- soft foam ball and throw it -gently- at the baby's face. Whichever hand they put up to stop ball is the one they'll use dominantly.

My brother, when he was a baby, was kind of slow and the ball kept hitting him in the face. It was funny and kind of sad.

Not really. You can always look at the parent's genes though. If the both of you are right handed your baby probably will be as well. If one of you is left handed then it has a chance of being left handed but still will probably be right handed. But, both of my parents were right handed and they have two lefties so I guess you can never tell. Yes and no. Some kids don;t make a decision until 3 years old or later. I knew right away my older daughter was a lefty. Anything you put in front of her, she went for with the left hand - every time. She is 8 now and a lefty at everything but softball batting. Go figure!

if he/she is a toddler, hold out a crayon or treat of somekind, like a raisin or something, and see which hand they reach out with.

I just read about this the other day. A baby isn't right handed or left handed until they are two. I read it on a web site....I think american baby or something like that....I will see if I can find the article.

I'm looking....I think American Baby

When my first daughter started to pick things up she always did it with her left. I think it was around 8 months when we thought she could be a lefty... She is a lefty....My daughter at 1.5 is using everthing with her right. one of my children is almost 3 1/2 and i still cannot tell with her.. with the others it was more obvious. but not really until they start drawing with crayons, feeding themselves, etc, around 18 mos or so.

Usually by eighteen months, a child will have a preferred hand and by two years, you will know for sure whether the child is left or right-handed.

well my daughter is almost 3 yrs old and i still can't figure out if shes right or left handed, she still uses both hands to color with, hold a spoon or fork with and throw with!...both me and her father are right handed, but her father's middle sister and his father are both left handed....so i wonder if my daughter is going to be both left and right handed or shes still figuring out which hand she does better with!
