Is it too early to teach my 5yo daughter to read music and play the piano?

She can read really well already, and I want to get her started playing early to find out if she will like it.

Answers:
My daughter started piano lessons shortly after she turned 6. She could read at a 3rd grade level and had the necessary attention span.

Most piano instructors I talked to said that they don't like to start a child that young unless they can read. I was told 3rd grade is typically the time to start.

It is really up to you and the piano instructor, unless of course you are teaching her. If she can read well and has a good attention span I don't see any reason why you couldn't start her now.

Other Answers:
Nope. She could be a prodigy!

It's never too early to try to teach a child something. But since she is so young, don't force it on her. it's never too early. nor is it ever too late.

I think its always better to start young, but not so young that the kid doesnt get to enjoy childhood. In other words, try to teach her and see where it goes.

Let her decide what things she wants to do. You can introduce it to her though. It's best to start kids on things like this early.

No, 5 is a good age. She will learn hand and eye coordination skills. Besides that instrument is very hard to play, by the time she is out of grade school she will be a pro. I hope she likes it. No its a good age to learn. I suppose you love music, chances are she will too.

no that's the perfect age

Nope Start now My neice has been reading and playing since she was 4....

Nope. It's never too early for a musical education and actually the younger they are the better they will pick it up, but don't force her because then there is no chance at a change in heart later. No of course not, but let HER decide wat instrument she wants to play, don't shoose for her. if she wants to play the piano, go for it. remember those who do what they like are happier in the long run, and get whaththey want out of life!

I personally think that is depends on the child. Your daughter sounds bright and b/c she is so young her mind will soak it all up like a sponge. Plus there are methods, like yamaha, for teaching very young childern. I would just make sure to send her to a teacher that specializes in teaching younger children. Does your daughter WANT to learn to read music and play the piano? If she wants to, go for it, but if it is something YOU want FOR HER, then I would start with DVD's, books, activities, all things music, and surround her with music, but don't push her. Let it be her choice!

music has no age limit so its never 2 early 2 learn music, and moreover a 5 yr old can very well understand music so go ahead

No it's not too early. There are pianists out there who has started earlier than 5.

I myself bought my son (12 months) a little piano to get him used to the music. A few times a day, he goes to the piano corner and bangs on it. I got this for my son when he was 9 months old. Before he used to just bang on the piano with his hands. Now he goes by there and use 1 finger to hit specific keys. :-)

It's fun. I'll make them smarter.. go for it!

no it's never too young to learn the sooner the better As long as its presented as something fun to do, and not another thing she must learn you'll find its better and easier to start her into music at a young age.

Becareful how you go about it, see if she has an interest in it, and then keep it fun until she's old enough to understand the benifits of working at it.

Now is the PERFECT time!
