How many words should my 14 month old son be saying?

He is currently saying Mama, Dada, Up and "ba" which can mean, bye bye, ball, or many other items he points out on a given day! HELP!

Answers:
That is probably almost exactly average. There are 14 month old babies who don't say *any* words. There are some rare ones who have a vocubalary of 100 words. But 3-4 is typical. And having one "catch-all" word is *very* normal!! Sometimes it sounds like the words he uses most often; sometimes it's something like "this".

Keep in mind, too, that "ba" may sound like one word to you, but it may actually *sound* like 5 or 6 different words to your son. For instance, this is a typical conversation between parent and child:

Child: Ba
Parent: You want a ball?
Child: *Ba*
Parent: You want your bike?
Child: *BAAAA!!!"

He is *correcting* you. He can't understand why you aren't saying what *he* is!

lol Calm down! Normal child behavior is what you're getting. Some toddlers will talk early on whil others will take awhile.

my 14 month old daughter says....mommy, daddy, owie, buh-bye, hi, and that's about it. she points at everything and says blatently "whats that". Every child is different...don't panic! i talk to my son everyday sice that day he was born and he just can stop now. i think that a child has there own time to think no one can tell you when your child will speak it is up to your child. good luck. just dont babytalk your child that creats speach impediments.

my son was the same then he started whispering words now he is 2 1/2 he is talking louder all kids are different so dont panic

By age 2 1/2, the average child has a vocabulary of about 600 words, by age 5 or 6 that number rises to about 15,000 words, an increase of 10 words a day. By 3 years of age, most children have all the basic tools needed to form sentences and make conversation. Most 18 to 20 month olds will use 1 and 2 word sentences. By 24 months, the longest sentences include 4 and 5 words. By 30 months, sentence length will double again.

Studied early childhood development.

My daughter said about 6 words by that age, Then never spoke again until she was 4. she is 20 now and you can not shut her up..lol. Relax all kids are different and when they are ready they'll tell you..Just remember to speak words clearly and no baby talk words..They end up talking great and we end up talking like babe's.. He's totally normal...don't worry. My daughter was right at that stage and now at 19 months she has a 100 word vocabulary. They just grow in streaks and you never know when your kiddo is going to hit one.

Don't worry...soon you won't be able to shut him up. :)

My son didn't even say that much.

He started saying a few more words at age 2, then just started talking in complete sentences. He's 3 now and cannot be stopped.

My daughter talked soooo much earlier. It really worried me. Boys are sometimes just slower.

My nephew only says UH-OH, Cat and MA. He understands everything though= and he is 19 months old. His cousin who is also 19 months says all the names of all people in the family, light, cat, bye, hi, etc etc too much to count. She is just talking earlier.

No big deal.
