4 yr. old phase?

My 4 yr old son has been acting, well, like a brat. I really hate to say that, but i don't know what else to label it as. He won't listen to me when i tell him to do something, he won't clean up any of his messes when i ask him to, he won't eat what i give him, he's throwing temper tantrums (slamming doors, yelling at me etc.), and he has been being mean to his his older sister (he bit her today). He won't listen to my husband either, or my sister who babysat him today. I don't understand, it's not like he's not getting attention or getting negative attention. I usually try to give him the benefit of the doubt. What am I doing wrong or is this some kind of phase? He's making me feel like he's mad at me, or angry, or bored, I don't know. Ive been playing with him and cooking with him and finding productive fun things for him to do. He is good most of the time, but the bad behavior seems to be outwaying the good more and more.

Answers:
sounds like he is trying to find his boundaries. be firm with him. Has there been a change in his life recently? This may be a way of him to cope also. If this is the case he needs the security of boundaries also, to know that you are controlling the things that go on in his life. be firm but loving with him. and if you say no or something else that is discipline, stick with it no matter how long her is upset or yells for. Start making consequences, and make sure he knows that it is for the way he is acting. Make sure that it is fair and that he understands why he is getting that punishment, like put in the corner, or a toy taken away. something like that. He just needs to know you are the boss, but love him. I am sure he knows that though. good luck.
He's out of control...because there is no control...seems he is in charge not you. Time to for the foot to come down hard before you end up on the front page some day as being murdered.
