My son's daycare teacher said he shakes on occasion during the day, please help, anyone experienced this?

My son is 2 and a 1/2. He is an only child and goes to daycare 2 days a week. He is mellow but well adjusted, he only spends time around other kids during daycare. His teacher said she observes him shaking during different times of the day, for no apparent reason. I have never seen this at home and am very worried, is he afraid at daycare? He really seems to like his teacher. My child is not the anxious type. I am wondering how I can deal with this.

Answers:
Keep a close eye on him at home to make sure that he definitely is not shaking while at home. Take him to his pediatrician if you observe this.

Too me, it sounds like he is stressed and nervous and his daycare. He only goes 2 days a week and has not gotten comfortable with it. It takes a long time for a toddler to adjust to a new environment.

Maybe you can add another day for him for awhile. I am a preschool teacher and often suggest that parents send their children, who are having difficulties adjusting, 1 or 2 more day a week for about a month. This often helps the child.

You should also go an observe him in the daycare. Tell him you are just going to watch and see what he does. Make sure he sees you make a connection with his teacher. It often helps if he sees mommy and teacher as "Friends." Also watch his interactions with his peers. Something may have happened with a peer that has made him uncomfortable.

Try and arrange some play dates with his peers. You can even carpool together. It may help him feel more connected to the daycare. Good luck!

It might be a good idea to have your Doctor look at him.

I would express these concerns with his pediatrician and if they feel it needs to be looked into further then they can make the appropriate referrals. He is at a young enough age that should something be wrong that it may can be corrected before he gets any older. My prayers are with you. I have a 6 year old stepson, and he's been "rocking" since we can remember. I know it's not the same as shaking, but the doctors told us that the rocking was a stimulus for him - it made him feel good, sort of like masturbation for adults. Don't know if that helps...but definitely talk to the doc about it.
