At what age do you start offering a multi-vitamin to babies?

Answers:
You don't ever *have* to give babies multi-vitamins unless directed by your doctor.

Multivitamins are often prescribed for premature babies. Vitamin D and sometimes iron are often (but not always) prescribed for breastfeeding babies.

Most normal term babies though do not need vitamins. Especially formula fed babies because vitamins are added to the formula (not that formula is better). If the baby is breast fed you may want to ask about vitamin D and iron, and perhaps fluoride if your water is not fluoridated.

Otherwise, a good healthy diet and formula or breast milk should provide all the vitamins they need.

Other Answers:
You might wanna consult with your child's doctor before administering any vitamins. A lot of times the formulas has all the vitamins they need. I put my kids on them when I took them off formula and baby food.

I would wait until about 6months to 1 year before introducing that. At six months they're just starting solid foods -- so maybe 1 year.

I know a good site to reference for baby related questions though...see below. :)

my niece was given pediasure at 20 months but i would talk w/ ur pediatrician before taking any action. don't do it.

I would consult with a doctor. I agree with the fact that breast milk and formula contain all the essential vitamins, however I lived in Alaska when I had my babies and the doctor started me on a multi vitamin very young because of a vitamin d deficiency. For some reason this vitamin isn't transmitted in breast milk, and they were born in the winter time, in Alaska, there was no sunlight. So you may have a special consideration. It is not something I would do without talking to a doctor first, in this case there can be too much of a good thing.

This depends on the diet, the doctor, and the child. Personally, I always used vitamins on my children because no diet is ever complete, especially since, the kids often don't like to finish foods.
