It really depends on when the child is ready, but the average age is around 2 and a half.
As soon as the child show signs of standing, which is different for all children, girls seem to move faster than boys and it is much easier to potty train girls then boys, my oldest daughter started around 7-8 months old so she was actually trained to the big, the regular toilet by the time she was 1 year-old. I haven't had a boy so I can only comment on girls. Good Luck there is one thing that goes for the boys & girls and that is you must have patiences

18 months is really the earliest but 2 years is the normal age to start. as soon as they start walking be patient because it gets very messy
when they start staying dry for a long period of time and showing interest in the toilet (like wanting to sit on it and stuff)
I started potty training my son when he was 1 1/2 to 2 years old. He basically let me know he was tired of wearing diapers.
