My wife insists on my son drinking rice milk instead of cows milk. Is his long term health in jeopardy?

She breastfed him for 10 months, then to formula for maybe 3 months and then to solids. He has a healthy appetite, eats his meat, fruit, and veggies. I just do not want to find out later on that he has any deficiencies because of the lack of protein in the rice milk

Answers:
Children should drink whole milk until the age of 2. The fat is vital for brain development, calcium for strong bones and teeth.

The AAP has a great book on nutrition, but I no longer have a copy.

Other Answers:
i'm not really familiar with rice milk, but cow's milk is very essential for babies, he will need it,,

no...it is actually natural to become lactose intolerant...humans are the only species I am aware of that drink the milk of another animal. Is there calcium in the rice milk? It's less likely to cause him problems like lactose intolerance. I think he's probably just fine, and his protein can come from so many different sources.

it will be fine because he gets protein from meats and other things im not familiar with rice milk but i dont think its going to cause any problems with him not drinking milk even though it good for his teeth and bones

Well, the main reason for cow's milk is the calcium. Children need a lot of calcium because their bones are continually growing. Does rice milk contain calcium?? And if it does, does it have enough? You may want to call your child's pediatrician to make sure. If your child is getting enough calcium from other food source, then it may not be a problem. But like I said, just make sure your child is getting enough calcium. Good luck!

Rice milk is fine, my daughter drinks it. Especially since he's a good eater he'll get all he needs from everywhere else. Cows milk really isn't Mandatory! If your really concerned try soya milk it's more rich. Check out this site.

Children up to the age of 10 need to drink whole milk in order to grow properly. Whole milk contains a range of essential fats as well as vitamins and minerals essential to a growing child. After this age, you can switch them to milk substitutes, but you should ensure that supplements are taken to take care of potential deficiencies (such as calcium).

If your wife insists that your son stays on rice milk, I would check the nutritional content against that of cow's milk. If necessary, buy your son a good quality multivitimin to take alongside his non-dairy diet. If you are really concerned, consult a nutritionist and, if necessary, get them to speak to your wife about your son's diet.
