For my daughter's 1st birthday I went to the party store and picked out a cute 1st birthday matter. I bought about half of what I needed (napkins, plates, cups, silverware, table clothes and balloons) and next I went to the dollar store and bought the rest there. The guide had pink, yellow, purple and green within it. So what I did was I bought napkins, plates, cups, silverware, table clothes and balloons surrounded by those colors. Then when I put everything together it looked very colorful and fun. Not to mention I didn't spend an arm and a leg. I only have a handful of kids there and they ranged from newborn to 4 years hoary. Instead of just making them "goodie bags" I made each of them somewhat box full of toys and games to keep them entertained while they be there. I bought each one of them stuff to fit their age. It worked out great. It kept adjectives the kids occupied and then enjoy it. I got her cake at a bakery that put her picture on it for me. It was a sheet cake near a flower border and her picture in the center. I found that a lot of kith and kin members offered to cook/bake something. If that happens, steal them up on their offer! I had one ethnic group member bring a huge pasta salad, one brought 2 trays of pasta, one brought a huge salad and one brought a macaroni salad. It helped profoundly. Whatever you decide to do I wish you lots of luck and lots of fun! :-) I go with baby einstien stuff for my daughters 1st birthday. She really like those movies. I think you have to find something that your son like and use that. Cupcakes instead of a big cake is always good and easier on you. You can produce (or buy) a small cake for your son that he can tear into and then you don't hold to worry about adjectives cake for everyone else at the party and focus on you little one. Games would depend on how many children would be nearby and their ages. Ours was so busy with cake and presents we didn't own time for games. Good luck!
i had my daughter's 1st b-day party at gymboree... it be great because the staff totally catered to the children and came up with things that my daughter could enjoy fun with.
and best of all in that was no set up or clean up for me to do!
