Each state has it's own age requirements for entering school. In California, kids have to be 5 by Dec 2 to enter kindergarten in the fall of that year, so they would have to be 6 by Dec 2 to enter 1st grade. Many kids, esp boys, are held back from starting K for an additional year, if they are not ready. So some kids may be a year older than what is required.

In my state the child has to be 6 years old. The rule is the child must have turned 6 by August 15 of the year they are starting 1st grade.
