Is there anybody out there that has a control freak brother/sis in law? When should you step in for kids'sake

Examples: spanking a 15 month old; not expressing any concern when child gets hurt (due to clumbsiness) and not allowing me to give a hug, etc.; taking away all favorite toys for good because child whines; never allowing child to do anything/ go anywhere w/o mother. No Santa, tooth fairy or Easter bunny... This child is 3 years old now. : (
I feel like I should say something to these people, but don't feel like it is my place. What do you think? What would you do?

Answers:
I feel for you....with my sister, I've had so many issues with how they've raised their children... What I try to do is talk to someone else and see what they think. If they agree that the parents are being un-reasonable, or wrong, then I do talk to my sister & b-i-l.

Just know that if you do talk to them, your words will likely not go over very well. People don't like to hear that they are doing something wrong...especially with the way they are raising their children.

That said, I think giving specific examples of what you find objectionable is good...give them literature on effective parenting...let them know you are available to help if they need a break from the child...

Good luck...I know it's a difficult situation, but you have to do what's best for the child...

If it's just you opinion on their parenting then you should not be the one to say any thing to them, but that does not mean that your husband cant:) Now..If you feel that the childern are in danger of verbal, physical and/or emotional abuse than I feel that it is your moral responsebility to speak up. First with the parents, if that dosen't work. You may try speaking to other family members to see if they are aware of whats going on and where they may stand; a family intervention could follow. If no steps are being made to improve that situation you may be to forced to contact your county social services. I feel that every human is obligated to protect every child that is or may come into harm.
