after x-ray dr said needs mri on my son's knee. Wouldn't say more. I need to research what the reasons why?

Son complains of knee pain sometimes, he is 3 yrs old, very active and with no other problem. On first visit orthopedist did an x-ray, saw something abnormal and ordered an mri and bloodwork (cbc, cpr, psr). Would not say more and says cannot say more until mri and bloodwork gets back. Mri not until next week. We are nervous and want to research or at least know possible scenarios. Should we be very worried?

Answers:
There are many reasons why the doctor would want to do further testing, the extreme being lupus and the least being soft tissue damage. The real problem is not the further testing, the issue is that your doc is making you wait all this time with no answers, that is bad medicine. I have worked in healthcare for over ten years and pediatricians are ussually the most comforting physicians, maybe you need to voice your concerns to him a little more and let him know that you are really concerned and want to know what he may be looking for.

If your doctor won't tell you what he suspects is wrong, it's time to get a different doctor.

There's a lot that can go wrong with the knee that isn't going to show up on an x-ray. Cartiledge problems are probably what he's looking for, and even an MRI won't show all of it all the time. Maybe your Doctor doesn't have much of a bedside manner or doesn't feel he can speculate with you and just wants the straight answer for you. I wouldn't be too worried, most of the time there's someplace to get an MRI right away if he felt it was an emergency of some sort. And a 3 year old will heal any wound very quickly. I don't know if a 3 year old really can have the same problems I have with my knee (cartiledge tears, 3 year old cartiledge is different) but I wouldn't worry too much.

Then again, you have to worry every day with a kid that age. Just don't get carried away. X-ray can’t see soft tissue, MRI can. Be thankful your Dr. is pushing to find right answer. 2nd opinion never hurts. You may try explaining to your Dr. that MRI’s are very $$$$ and you need to know why it is required.
