my child is 21months and doesn't say words or speak, babble here and there, is this normal?

Answers:
i'm the same way my daughter is 22 months, and isn't speaking, she is however doing some sign language so day to day stuff isn't so bad as 99% of the time i know what shes on about!
i know this is that old cliche line that everyone has probably written but _ every child is different.

im the only one not bothered about my child's speech, the way i see it, as long as your child is happy and does make sounds.... they're fine!
it will come in time for both of our kids and then it will be "shut up!"

My nephew is 2 and he speaks russian, but he's american? I dunno, I hope its normal! It's kinda cute!

dont complain enjoy the quiet!!! mine wont shut up Yes. I also have a 21 month old and he doesn't really say too much either. My Dr. said it is normal, especially if they are not the first born.

it depends on your definetion of normal, it is becoming more common but it's not healthy your child should be talking by now. But if he or she hasn't been exposed to talking regularly or provoked to talk then why would he. It could also be a hearing problem.

That happend with my daughter I was recommended to let her spend more time with other kids her age, I put her in a nursery for a few hours a day and she began to speak immidiatly and hasn't stopped since... :)

Speak to you doctor. My daughter was behind in everything from cutting teeth to walking and talking. Turns out she has a form of autism called PDD. Pervasive Developmental Disorder. No meds needed just speech therapy and a great group of teachers If your really worried check with your doctor but my son was like that, he didn't bother talking because he was so content he had no real need to. The first sentence he ever said came out when he was three years old after his first day of nursery "I don't like nursery it's horrible"
He found his voice eventually :)

some children are just slow in talking as well as walking i wouldn't worry to much about it right now but one suggestion for you when she or he wont's something does she or he just point at it and some one gives it to him or her if so that is probably your problem make her or him ask for it my daughter did that with her 1st child and after she stopped and made her son ask he started talking real well then My boyfriend's niece was the same way when she was a baby and toddler--so quiet you could not even know she was near! Now, she is a normal little six-year-old that will chase you around to tell you things. If fact, she speaks a little of two other languages now. I wouldn't be concerned...just show the child you accept them and give it time. Before you know it, your child will be chatting away!

Has your doctor commented on it at all? Our doctor usually asks what words my child can say and tells me what is about normal for that age. It may not be late enough to worry quite yet. It may be one of those things that just happens when it happens.

My grandson did the same thing. I'd have to disagree with the other answers and say that, "No, it's not normal". You really should take him and get him tested. Especially if you've had him immunized. He could have had a reaction to one of the vaccinations, which could lead to Autism. Don't freak out, but DO go get him tested. My grandson is a high functioning autistic (he's 7). He didn't say one word (or babble) until he was 2-1/2. He had delayed potty training (4-1/2). But he's doing great now and I'm sure your child will too. Just don't put off getting him tested. Good Luck!

Definately call your physician about that. When my daughter was almost 2 she was talking full sentences and knew all her colors and could count already. Ask about autism. It is way too common in kids these days and the number 1 cause is childhood immunizations. My son is 19 months, he babbles. Just lately he's begun to have some clear words...like No, juice, and yesterday it was cheese. Its perfectly normal

No. I have a 19 month old and she's starting to say mini-sentences now (two or three words together). Plus, my niece is 23 months old and she says a few sentences. I'd talk to your doctor and check to make sure he/she is not deaf or having a communication delay. He/she may need speech therapy.

My age 18 months, a child should say 10-50 words.

As long as her doctor says that she does not have a hearing/speaking problem and is normal...don't worry about it. Children speak at different ages. I'm a little confused as to if your saying the child 'babbles here and there' or doesn't 'babble here and there'. If there is no babbling taking place and the doctor says the child is fine...I would go for a second opinion just to be on the safe side, as that would tend to point to a hearing problem.
