How can I find a good childcare center for a 2yo while I work?

I work 7-4 weekdays. I live in the south bay near San Jose, California. I checked yahoo and found a list of 300 centers. Should I find 5 that are closest to my work and then visit them? What should I look for besides price, cleanliness, nice staff, etc?

Answers:
Visiting a center is great and actually a must. I work in child care and I will tell you there are some great one but there are those horror stories too so be careful. In Texas there is a web site for Texas Department of Family and Protective Services. On this site you can see all licensed centers and home centers, their hours, and all the things that they have been written up for in the past year or so. Keep in mind even good centers are written up occasionally. Read what it is for and keep in mind the severity. Paper work is not a major thing - leaving a kid in the van is. There must be a similar site for California. Find out how regulate the centers and find their site. Then visit them. They must make you feel welcome. Do not trust a center that says you can only come and drop off and pick up. Make sure it is clean and the kids and teachers look happy. Ask questions!!! Good luck.
