Why is my 5 year old daughter unable to follow through on tasks?

She does not write her name yet, she has trouble listening during "circle time" and is my only child to have really out of control tantrums. She does a lot of pretend play by herself and seems to be totally absorbed in her own world. Do I have reason to be losing sleep over this? I'm very concerned.

Answers:
As a Kindergarten teacher, my first suggestion would be -- talk to your daughter's teacher. Let the teacher know your concerns and ask if she has any ideas. She sees your child for a significant number of hours during the day and working together as a team with your child's teacher can help you accomplish WONDERFUL things.

As far as following through on tasks, I would make sure you are presenting your daughter with very simple things. For example, instead of having her write her whole name, have her write the first letter of her name only. When she writes that letter, be excited! PRAISE her, show everybody in the house the letter she made, etc. etc. Add a new letter after one has been mastered.

Other Answers:
Not only would I talk to the teacher.. Talk to your doctor about any concerns you may have. You never know it may be a medical problem that the doctors would be able to help with.
