Anbody with kids... can you help me please?
Answers:
Both of my daughters have had this. One was hospitolized for two days and stuck in a tent with constant moisture and given breathing treatment of abutoral(sp) like an asthmatic would get. This opens up the airways and lets her breath easier.
When my other daughter came down with it a couple years later I recognized it right off and we bought a humidifier which helped a lot. The first night before we could get it we just turned on a hot shower and layed down to sleep on the floor with her. Wasn't very comfortable but it helped her breath fine and sleep through the night.
It lasts a few days to a week depending on how soon you catch it, and how bad she's got it. You really don't HAVE to take her to the ER again as long as you keep her in a steamy room so she can breath. The humidifier works great, and they have some that work without heat that are safe for the kids.

Sister's daughter had it. Sit up all night in the bathroom with the child and have a steamy shower running. (Just sit in the room, not in the shower.) It will ease breathing.
just keep an eye on her temperature too high and you will have to make that trip to er They do have treatments for children with severe croup. Web MD has a good overview of what croup is, home treatment options and medications doctor's may give: http://www.webmd.com/hw/raising_a_family/hw31908.asp
steam but just mind you dont burn her
My daughter had it really bad one time and her doctor told me since it will get worse at night to bundle her up to keep her warm and take her outside in the cool air.I would get a second opinion about not being able to take anything because when my daughter had it they gave us some antibiotics and a puffer.First of all go get a second opinion.... That doctor sounds like a crackhead... Second of all.. go to er now.... and have another doctor look at her.... third please please go get that child some help.. where ever you live... if you can't find some to help you there go to the next city... Turn on the shower in the bathroom, hot water, shut the door and have a seat in the bathroom with your baby, the steam helps her breathe better, you might even try a vaporizer. I had to let mine sleep in her carrier/carseat so that her head was elevated a little, it was much easier for her to breathe.
My son had it at 9 months along with pink eye. It lasted for about 2 weeks. He wasn't completely congested the whole time though. Take the advice about the steamy bathroom. Turn the shower on as hot as it goes and place the plug in the bath tub and just sit on the closes toilet with your child in your arms with their head upright. It will help with some of the congestion. A good time to do it is before bed and nap. You can also use Vick's vapor rub (children's kind) if the child is over 3 months of age. But I don't recommend doing that until the cough dies down it could aggravate the cough. You should also but a humidifier in your daughters room when she sleeps and you can elevated the head of her bed or crib so she can sleep better.
They sound really bad but they bounce back quickly. If your child is old enough Popsicles always feel nice and a yucky throat. They now have Pedaled pops that will help keep her hydrated.
I hope she feels better soon

I'm going with the consensus here, steam works great. Also, if you can and feel comfortable, Elevate her slightly when she's sleeping. A pillow under her crib mattress, or prop her bed up if you can do it securely. If she's older try putting a couple of pillows under her head. If you are really worried head to the ER, don't even hesitate, and if you don't like your pediatrician find a new one. I have had 2 of my kids in the ER for croup. I was always told to take them in the bathroom with the shower running on hot and let them breath the steam, or take them outside if it is cool out. It is such a scary thing! My oldest son had to have a breathing treatment when he had it. The worst of it should only last a couple of days, but if you think she is seriously struggling for air, do not hesitate to take her to the ER!! Just keep her with you all night, you probably won't be able to sleep. Good luck.

Croup can be really scary. My 3 yo is very susceptible to it and gets it at least once a year. Each time (3X's) we've had to take him to the hospital (because it happened up on him at night) and each time they have given him a nebulizer with albuterol (sp?) in it. That will pretty much knock it out. One mother I know, who's 4 kids have all had it suggested taking a HOT shower with my son (as hot as he could take it), then wrapping him up VERY well and taking him into the night air. The contradiction of hot and cold is good for their bronchial tubes. I'd suggest one parent take the shower with your daughter and the other take her outside.
Croup can be a very scarey thing and hopefully your daughter will be well soon!
Both of my boys have asthma. My youngest has had the croup 3 times this year. Cool outside at night, take them outside. Steam in the shower, humidifiers. If the cough is really bad, and it gets to where they are vomiting, get to the ER quickly. Watch for fever! Croup (sp) is just a really nasty cough and yes it is a virus. You could try vicks on her chest and just some over the counter cough medicine...if the doctor didn't give you any, which doesn't make much since. Virus or no virus, treat the symptoms and just let the virus run it's course. Maybe try putting a humidifier in her room with vicks in it. It will open up her airways more so that she can be a little more comfortable.

My Dr told us to take them out in the cool night air or sit with them in a steamy bath or make a croup tent you can use a 2 man tent or a sheet and make a home made one use a humidifier in side the tent usually can tell results within the hour this was our best results
