It's cold outside right? Get the rest of your family to reinforce wearing jackets and stuff inside and especially gloves! If it's just the thumb and HE wants to quit as well, my old friend used to put duct tape on her thumb. The taste was horible and it hurt to take it off.
Soy Sauce is really salty my daughter could not stand it. Dip his hand in it then wip it off. When he chews the salt will not taste very good. Even mustard or pickle juice may work.
I think your child might be teething (the teeth are starting to come out). Try a teether or one of those things you put in a baby's mouth then they start sucking on it thingies; they look like the tips of milk bottles? Those whatchamacallits! Can't remembers coz its been so long since I had a baby.
Just a drop of tabasco. It's enough to last for an entire day. Anyway, after the first try it's not gonna happen again. Ever. Guaranteed.
Why does it bother you that he chews on his hand? Leave him be it will stop. My kids all had a little comfort thing they did that soothed them. My seven month old chewed on his fingers allot when he was 5 months, till a few bottom teeth popped out. Now he hardly ever does it.
The best way would be to go to the doctor and have him cut it off.
My son used to do this all the time (he's 2 1/2 now) and my pediatrician told me to just ignore it. Drawing too much attention to it will just make it more appealing. Unless he is chewing until he is bleeding, I would not worry about it. My son stopped about 4 months ago, and it was never an issue.

Well it used to be there were myths about childrens teeth being messed up by sucking or chewing too long, but they have come to realise that that was not intirely true. As long as he is not hurting himself I would fret too much about it. If it really bothers you when he starts to do it distract him pick him up talk to him or give him a popsicle, he will eventually ween himself from it. It is also a possibility he is teething if thats the case it helps by giving him a posicle or checking for new teeth and putting baby orajel on it. Its always frustrating with baby's because everybody has all the right answers or standards, that never really apply to anyones baby. So go with the flow let him develop and grow, I am sure he wont do it when he is 5 or 6... goodluck, hope that didnt sound too harsh...
be careful with the hot sauce and anything else, if he has chewed himself raw it will burn and then he won't let you put ANYTHING on his hand, not even to heal the raw skin. You can give him a special toy that he can chew on, like an adult toothbrush or a baby teething toy and encourage him to chew on it. It sounds like he may be teething. My kindergartener is getting his molars in and EVERYTHING goes in his mouth, from his hands to his jacket to his backpack straps that drag on the floor. It's hard to keep up with him all the time but I remind him when I see him. Beef jerky works too, the tougher the better!
put some chilli powder on his thumb.but you better watch out,he might rub his eyes.
I agree with sun is shining.
