How can I get 3 year old to stop biting his nails?

He has had this nervous habit for about two months. Not only is it his nails, but the edge around the actual nail. The results look painful. He never had a pacifier, had no problem weaning, et al. He does seem aprehensive about growing up ( he just turned three ) but not in an overt way.
I realize it may pass, like many of the other phases children go through, but I'd like to do something about this before it becomes permaneant.

Answers:
Maybe put a little soap or lemon juice around them to make them taste bad? Neither will harm him but might just do the trick...

At 3?
I wouldn't worry yet.

My mom used tabasco sauce. Just the tiniest amount. The one drawback, my sister started loving it. put some flavour on his nails that he detests, e.g. vinegar, etc. gradually, he'll stop.

when i was a kid my bestfriend used to suck on two of her fingers all the time... when i was about 6 and she came to spend the summer with us my mom stopped her from it by painting this stuff on her fingers that you can buy at any pharmacy but i know for a fact walgreens has it because i used to work there and i saw it... it tasted bitter so she didnt want to do it anymore... its called like stop bite or something she put it on her hands a couple times a day and withina few weeks she didnt need to anymore
goodluck ;)

my doctor told me to try this with my son
reward him for not doing it
try stickers on a calendar, every day that they do it... no sticker

BABY ORAGEL thats what i used i have 3 kids and my daughter did it so would put the stuff on and around her nails i did this 2 times daily and it did stop... its safe for children by all means DO NOT USE HOT SAUCE it can cut your childs breat off... if this dont work ask there doctor they should have somre papers on what to use but that worked for me Maybe you should put on mittens on him and make sure he cant get them off. If that doesn't work put spicy (not too spicy) things on his finger and when he tries to bite his nails his mouth will get hot so he will probably not do it again!

It will pass. Make him do something that will make his hands busy for a while so he won't think of sucking / biting his nails. It is a sign that he is nervous of something...reassure him that you are there for him and he can tell you everything. If keeping his hands busy doesn't work, try coating it with something (like hot sauce for instance) that he will repell doing it again. If that doesn't work either, give him pacifyer (my mom did that to me when I was a kid). Never the less, they say that kids who sucks their finger are sweet and well behave. Good luck.

i'm having the same problem with my toddler and i just make him take them out of his mouth if i catch him. i will not allow him to do it in front of me and hopefully eventually he will stop entirely since he can't do it while i notice. i am just going to see how it progresses before i do anything drastic! my son won't even keep a bandaid on his leg, much less every single finger. that is unrealistic.
