How long will it take for a normal 2-year-old to gain eight pounds, and/or grow seven inches?

My daughter just turned two and is 32 lbs. and 33" tall. She's always been slightly above average on the growth curve. I'm worried that she'll outgrow her convertible carseat before she's old enough for a booster (three years, if I'm thinking correctly.) Her carseat only goes to 40 lbs. and 40" - so how long will it take for her to gain eight pounds and/or grow seven inches? Will I need a new, larger carseat before her next birthday?

Answers:
The average weight gain for children 24-26 months is 4-8 ounces per month. That equates to 3-6 pounds in a year. Average height gain for children 12-36 months is .3-.4 inches per month, which equates to 3.6-4.8 inches in a year. So, as long as her growth is fairly average, you should be fine. The other thing to consider (and speak with your doctor about this) is that if she was tall enough and heavy enough for the booster seat, would that be a safe restraint for her? If so, then I wouldn't worry too much about putting her in one even if she was a few weeks or even a couple months from 3. It's not like a police officer is going to demand your child's birth certificate in order to cite you for improper restraints, when the child IS in a restraint. You'll likely be just fine!

I've got a two-year-old nephew, and he was already too tall for his old carseat before his last birthday in November. I don't think the age restrictions really matter when the kids are too big to fit the younger seats anymore.

She may slow down. My son was huge for the first 6 months and then basically stayed the same for over a year. He's 2.5 now and 26lbs.

I think its impossible to say though for sure. Every child grows at their own rate.

I doubt she will grow that much before she is 4 or 5 which is big enough for a booster. Your doctor could tell you better they have formulas that can predict height sometimes.

Most towns have child safty seat check ups that are free or low cost. Im sure if you scheduled one of these they could address your concerns and let you know your options in child safty seats. When they did my kids seats I didnt want to ever take them out they did such a great job and I felt better about their safety. Here is a link to find one in your area.

And just because they are bigger it does not mean the rules dont matter. My pediatrician said it is not the height or weight that is the main issue its the ability to control their bodies physiologically. Muscle-skeletal development

EVERY CHILD IS DIFFRENT IT DEPRNDS HOW MUCH THEY WIGHT AT BIRTH AND HOW THEY EAT IN GENERAL EVERY CHILD HAS OR SHOULD HAVE A DOCTOR THAT SHOULD ANSWER THSE TYPE OF QUESTIONS, NOTHING PERSONEL.
