What is the best age to take away the crib?

What age do we use the convertible part on the crib or go to a twin bed?

Answers:
18-21 months is good, and some children will even show you on their own by attempting to climb out of the crib. When they do that, they are telling you that they want to move onto something much bigger and better. :D

You want to start them off on a toddler bed. A twin bed might be too big and might fall out of it. I would say between 18-21 mo.

You could take away the crib on day one. If you dont want your baby in bed with you... put the crib matress on the floor in your room so your baby is near you. Don't underestimate the value of that kind of security for your baby, though I prefer them to share the bed for a year or two. Don't worry... they will want their own "big boy or big girl" bed soon enough, then you'll miss em. Just before the child is able to climb out of the crib. My son is 18 months & we're putting him in a bed within the next few weeks.

When the child can crawl out of the crib is the first sign to take away the crib. My son didn't like the toddler bed so it was a waste. I put him in the twin bed and he was fine with that. I told him he was a big boy now. He was happy with that. So, it depends on you.

i would say3 and a half.

My daughter is 15 months and just got switched to a toddler bed. I think it is important that they understand the concept of going to sleep, that they are to stay in bed and go to sleep and not keep climbing out (that is the challenge with switching). If your child is still fussing quite a bit before they go to sleep in the crib, then your switch might not be successful. My daughter was to the point where all I had to say was "it's nap time" while I was carrying her to the crib, and she would lean her head on me, then she would try to go to sleep as soon as I laid her down. So, I knew she was probably ready for a bed. I have two children and they both were given a toddler bed on there first b-day. All you have to do is put them in it and put a baby gate up at the door. Both my sons took to it the fist night. Some children will some will not.

Every parent is different, every child is different. I've read you need to get them to a toddler bed at 20 months, stop using the crib when they've reached 35 inches in height. I say to heck with it. Your child is different from mine. I have a tall child, you might have a shorter one. Mine may not be mature enough to understand that he's suppose to stay in a toddler bed, yours might.

There's so much to consider. Think about your child. Has your child out grown the crib yet? Does he/she have enough room to sleep comfortably? If not, then move them to a toddler bed. If they aren't small enough for a toddler bed(because every child is different again) then move to a twin bed. Just push it up again the wall, using a chair or a nice mesh/plastic bed rail that will fit under the matress(while staying in place) and see if that works.

For financial reasons, once my son grows out of his crib, I plan to move him directly to a full size bed, just skipping the toddler and twin bed altogether, doing exactly as I mentioned, and praying for the best.

I urge parents to remember that no one know's their children better than them. No child is text book perfect, and so the advice that they give should be taken with a grain of salt. If your child is the second or third child they may see their older sibs using a bed and may want to be like them. Cool, as long as it works I'm all for it. Just use your instincs, don't second guess yourself, and know you're doing the best for your child that you can.

Best Wishes~
Amanda
