What is the best way to teach my 3 year old to read?
Answers:
Don't let those other parents fool you into thinking that their kids are gifted geniuses. Most kids don't have a clue at this age and they are probably exaggerating.
Start with your child by reading Alphabet books. Dr. Seuss's ABC, is a good, fun one that you'll both enjoy. There are other good ones. Go to the library and ask the librarian.
Work with her everyday on a particular letter and its sound.
Homeschoolingadventures.com is a great website that can get you to some free worksheets, or buy a workbook at Wal-mart. Start with the letters that make obvious sounds like B,T,N,D,F....basically letters that never change their sounds. Then work on the letters in her name. In about a month you will get through all the letters and she will have some understanding of what they sound like. Feel free to spend some extra days on letters she hasn't grasped yet.
Since she's easily distracted, don't sit for a long time, 10 minutes three times a day instead of one block of 30 minutes. Not set in stone, just let her have a break if she stops paying attention.
Move on to flashcards with letter sounds. You can make your own, or you can also get these at Wal-mart.
Once she masters her letter sounds, start with small words. Don't worry, my daughter is 5 and we're just now doing this. Storebought flashcards are great for this, because sometimes it's hard to think of what words to use. Pick a few words that come up often in a short book that she likes. First use the cards to show her the word and help her sound in out. Then read the story, pointing to every word. Pause when you get to the word she is learning, and have her say it. We pick a few words and read the same book for several days in a row.
The next step: move on to bigger words and make her sound them out on her own.
One thing to remember is that kid's learn at their own pace. Never get frustrated with her, and if she gets frustrated or upset with herself for not getting it, it's better to take a short break and pick it up again after 10 or 15 minutes. This is one of the most important things she will ever learn to do, don't let her get stressed out about it because the effects could last a lifetime. Correct her with a smile as she works. Praise her every time she does her work, even if it's not perfect, and tell her you're proud of her.
It's great that you are showing interest in teaching her and this is a great bonding experience. She'll always remember that you spent the time with her and that her mommy was the one who taught her how to read.

She is probably not interested in this right now my son picked up his letters quickly yet my daughter is more athletic and has no interest yet. At this age they need to learn through play. I like to draw letters on the driveway with sidewalk chalk then I say stand on the letter B and so forth until we stand on all the letters. It is fun and we are outside. Just an idea.
hooked on phonics.....worked for me Use a phonics based reading program. Alot of children have difficulty with recognition learning. My mom taught 1st grade for 35 years and she swears by phonics based programs as the most effective teaching method for any child. Contact the school system your child will transition into for their preferred method. Good luck in your endevors. Your child is lucky that you care so much.
first you read it and then let your child read it with you

kids are so funny and lovable at that age .i have 3 kids one is 13,boy and a girl she is 8,and aonther boy he is 5 years old.And Im the Baby of my family.none of my sisters or brother has kids.just little ole me.....
you don't need phonics unless your child is slow...just make a daily habit of sitting with them and learning the letters, colors, and numbers (1-10 @ 1st), then letter sounds, then read simple books and have your child follow along. It's best to use a picture associated w/ each letter as well. Also try teaching your child to write/spell their own name, great starting point. Most of all, make this learning experiance "fun" and not a chore. (Leap Pad products are fun and cool, but your child will probably enjoy them more a bit further down the road)

worked for my daughter Sit down and read to her and eventually with her.
Since she knows most of the alphabet make sure she knows each letter sound.
Then maybe you can make a game out of flash cards.
1. Show a letter and let her think of a word that starts with it.
2. Show her a small word. Gradually introduce more cards as she gets better.
Buy alphabetic magnets for the fridge. Each day talk one letter and find things around the house that start with that letter. Leap Frog has noisy ones that tell the sound the letter makes. One of my nephews really loved it (another one didn't pay much attention to it)
BTW ... it doesn't sound like your daughter is doing too badly developmentally with the way things are now. She's doing great for 3 and every kid will develope at their own pace. Just keep learning fun.
My 2 year old daughter learned all of her mostly from leap frog products which work very well and keep children having fun .She also has flash cards, and we have given her a computer keyboard with the cord cut off to learn her letters and numbers on as well. So when you ask you child to find a letter you know they are not just memorizing the way the alphabet looks.

Leap Frog/ Flash Cards/ Self Read to your child 20 minutes a day. Every day. Without fail. Get lots of books and her own shelf. Let her pick out a book to "read" together.
One of the LeapFrog products people are talking about is the kitchen alphabet -- magnetic letters for the refrigerator and a cute farmhouse that plays the alphabet song and/or tells your child that "Every letter makes a sound, A says A and Aah." Costs under twenty bucks a GREAT feature is that is has two volumes! Very parent-friendly. My kid loves it. I won't brag like the rest of them, but you get the drift.
Preschool will make a huge difference. Not to worry.
