2year son have to wear glass for shortsight. he use to watch tv from close.can this be reason r b/defect?

Question:
My two year old son had a regular eye checkup done to kids of this age in my country. What we found out during this test to all of our surprise was that he has a short sight. It is going to be sphere -4.5 and cylinder -1. I and my wife are too much worried due to the high number. Not for the present but for the future since he is a growing kid. Regarding the same I have some questions.

Starting from one year and few months, he has been watching TV often. Due to my wife's pregnency in the mature stages, she could not control him fully nor I do being not at home most of the day. He goes very close to the TV (sometimes, less than a feet) and watch. Can this be a reason? My doctor says, he is doing so because he cannot see anything from far away and his comment is, it is a birth defect. If it is a birth defect will it get better or worse as he is a growing kid. The second thing is, if it is from TV, I dont have TV anymore, can it come back to good since he is not watching it anymore.

Answers:
Well, the first thing you need to do is STOP USING THE TV AS A BABYSITTER!!!!

It could be a birth defect, but most likely he got the bad eye genes from you and your wife.

Other Answers:
NO is the answer to your question. I am short sighted but it didn't happen till I was 12. The TV didn't do. It's just the way your eye's develop and how far the lens is from the back of the eye
If your doctor said it's a birth defect then it probably is and it's got nothing to do with watching tv since your son is still very young. watching tv from a very close range is still wrong and problems could arise later on. i think you should still keep your tv and only allow him to watch it from a safe distance.
