23 month old, with delayed sppech?

My 23 month old, Had tubes placed in his ear when he was 10 months old. Due to chronic ear infections. Im worried about his speech. He understands everything, He is just not saying much of anything besides. Moma, Dada, BaBa "brother" and BARNEY at of all names. The doctor said he might be delayed just a tad bit in his speech due to all the ear infection while he was an baby. Just wondering any other parents experience this with their children having tubes in their ears.

Answers:
My daughter went through the same thing. I had her assessed at a speech and language clinic...2 sessions latter she was catching up...2 years later we can't get her to stop talking! I would try to get a referral from your family doctor to speech and language. They offer a wide variety of services from you going to them once a week to them setting up a home program for you and having a recheck every once in a while.

If you want to know where your son fits in milestone wise this is a great website

good luck!

Don't worry about it, I have a nephew who had something similar to that. Except the doctors told his mom and my mom that he was going to be deaf, but he turns 4 today and he is talking so much that we get tired of him. But he did not start talking until he was almost three and at first we could not understand him, you just have to give your child time. Well I hope I made you feel a little better.

My Life

My Son is 21 months and says a lot of words, but you would never say he is "talking".
As long as he says something, I would assume he is okay.
Does he look at something when you say the name of the object?? Like Book or Barney??
If he does, I would say he's okay.
A bad thing you can do as a parent is compare your kid's development to another kid.
All kids are different. I really don't want to worry you, but my son went through the same thing at about the same age. You may want to get him assesed for Autism. You may be able to do this through your school district early childhood program. It may be just a delay, but if it is mild Autism the sooner you start therapy the better the outcome. Good Luck!!
