My almost 4 year old wakes up screaming and kicking at night, any advise?

If we put her to sleep in her own room, she wakes up screaming and runs in our room and gets in bed with us. We finally put a cot in our room so she would feel safe until she got over this, but she still wakes up hysterical and has to be soothed for a minute to go back to sleep. Any help would be great.

Answers:
Warm milk is a good idea. It will calm her before bed.

Also cut out sugar from her diet. To much will make her restless and give her nightmares.

Do not get her stimulated within an hour of bedtime. This should be relax and read time or something or put in a 1/2 hour cartoon to let her wind down from the day.

I would get her out of your bedroom. She is old enough to sleep in her own room. Get her a night light and a continuous playing CD with soothing music playing very softly. If when wakes up at night she will know where she is.

My niece did that for a while, she usually fell right back asleep. You don't want her to feel abandoned if she is afraid, but at the same time you don't want her dependent on you every night.

Did she mention if she is having nightmares, or is she just waking up and can't fall back asleep so she screams for you?
Warm Milk.
