What is a chemical pregnancy?
A pregnancy is called a chemical pregnancy if you test positive for pregnancy but start you period a few days later.
How common are they?
Unfortunately, too common. The numbers vary depending on the source, but generally up to 50 to 60 percent of all first pregnancies end in miscarriage--usually too early for the mother to know. With HPT's becoming more sensitive, we know about more of these early miscarriages than before.
What causes a chemical pregnancy?
Is it really a baby?
I'm cramping. Does that mean something is wrong?
Many say that menstrual-like cramps are normal in a pregnancy (Jonathan Scher, Preventing Miscarriage), but others disagree (Stefan Semchyshyn, How to Prevent Miscarriage and Other Crises of Pregnancy). Having had cramps for a week before I started bleeding, I tend think they should at least be treated as a warning signal. Cramps are actually uterine contractions and may indicate a lack of progesterine since progesterine relaxes the uterus.
What should I do if I start cramping?
Call the doctor and abstain from sex (at least use a condom)."It is known that prostaglandins in semen can stimulate uterine muscle activity and therefore increase contractions." (Jonathan Scher, Preventing Miscarriage)
What is my baby like at that early stage?
"The cells then fuse and immediately start to divide, so that after 4 days there is a mazz of cells called the blastocyst. This develops little fingerlike structures, known as chorionic villi, which are necessary for the embedding of the developing embryo. After 7 days, the embryo reaches the uterus. The villi start burrowing into the lining of the uterus, and the egg receives a new source of nutrition by opening into the mother's blood vessels.
"The mass of cells begins to form into a fetus and an amniotic sac. As the fetus develops, a cord goes out to the yet-to-be-formed placenta. Amniotic fluid is put into production, and the amniotic and chorionic membranes appear.
"By the 2nd week after conception, the pregnancy is large enough to be seen by the naked eye. The ovary still contains the tiny corpus luteum, which is supporting the conception." (Jonathan Scher, Preventing Miscarriage)
Why am I so emotional?
I had a difficult time because people didn't understand how attached I could be so early and quickly. After a week I was expected to "get over it." My husband hadn't really accepted it yet, so it was much easier for him. While he tries to be helpful, he doesn't understand.
"The major changes in a woman's hormonal makeup take place early in pregnancy, almost just after conception. (...) So, when you lose a pregnancy, it does feel just like you have lost a child, an anticipated child. There is scientific (hormonal) proof that these feelings occur!" (Preventing Miscarriage, Jonathan Scher)

I'm truly sorry to hear what you are going through. Depending on how many weeks into your pregnancy you are, you honestly may not have known that you were pregnant at all. Something like 30% of all pregnancies result in a miscarriage in the very early weeks. My heart goes out to you. Good luck.
yes it is possable some times if it is really early it will not hurt b/c being so early i am sorry if this happened to u. Try asking your doctor to do a hormone level test to determine how much if any pregnancy hormone is in your blood stream.

It could, I had a miscarriage days before I got repregnant with my daughter.
that would be devestating, but you can have misscarriage's all the time without knowing, if in real early stages like the first month. Doctors say women have more misscarriages than we realize. Also have them check you out for a tubal pregnacy, that has happened to a friend of mine and it can be server if not caught in timeChromosomal abnormalities also can result in a “blighted ovum”—a pregnancy sac that contains no fetus, either because the embryo did not form or because it stopped developing very early.
An ultrasound examination will show an empty pregnancy sac. A “blighted ovum” will eventually result in miscarriage, though miscarriage may not occur for weeks. Because waiting for a miscarriage can be upsetting, doctors often offer the woman the option of emptying the uterus with a procedure called a D&C (dilation and curettage). However, waiting for a miscarriage to occur naturally should not harm a woman’s health or chances for a healthy future pregnancy. A woman and her provider choose the approach that is best for her.
This happened to a friend of mine. She had four awesome, healthy boys after this.
I'm sorry you had to experience this type of loss. And you should treat it as a loss. Here is some more reading material on it.
Good luck to you.

So sorry. I think that early on, there is such a thing as a silent misscarraige. I hope that everything works out. Yes it could have happen this way...also I'm sorry that your going through this but I lost my son when he was 2 1/2 months old(he passed with SIDS) and I've also had a miscarriage before him so I know what your going though and believe me it easier going through a miscarriage then a death but it's still hard
Yes it's possible to have a miscarriage that comes out just like a regular or heavy period. My first pregnancy ended that way. I took 5 pregnancy tests, all positive (though the first 3 were so faint I took the others) and even had the health office confirm I was pregnant. I started spotting 6 days after I found out I was pregnant, and blood tests confirmed really low hormone levels that were not rising. I started bleeding about a week after the spotting and that lasted about 2 weeks start to finish. It was very sad and heartbreaking, but 6 months later I was pregnant again with my son, who is now 9 months old and healthy and beautiful. Only a blood test can tell your hormone levels at this point, and I'm sorry for your loss if that is what it turns out to be. My doctor did not do an ultrasound because he said that it would be too small to show up that early in the pregnancy and my hormone levels told him all that he needed to know.
It really depends on what kind of tests you took earlier. The best PREGNANCY test to take is when a doctor does a blood test. YES, it's very possible that you miscarried & if thats so then sorry for that to happen but on a lighter note, if you did miscarried then i'm sure there would of been some kind of avidence that your doctor would of seen but I could be wrong.More Questions & Answers...
