(For preg. women) what do the terms 'dilated' or 'effaced' mean?

im a 14 yr old boy, and my mom is pregnant. the doctor was talking bout dilations that may occur in the next couple of months or so and something about being "effaced" i have no clue wat these terms mean so can someone please tell me? thanks

Answers:
Both dilation and effacement are terms that relate to the cervix. The cervix basically connects the vagina to the uterus. As labor approaches and progresses, the cervix will dilate (open) and thin (efface.)

Dilation merely refers to the diameter of the cervix. Prior to the late stages of pregnancy, the cervix remains fully closed. Sometime during the last trimester, the cervix begins to open and this can represent the beginning of labor or the body preparing itself for labor in the near future.

As labor progresses, the cervix should dilate further and further until it reaches full dilation at about 10 cm.

Effacement refers to the thinning of the cervix. The cervix becomes thinner and thinner as labor approaches, and is 100% "effaced" or thinned out once labor begins.

It's hard to explane...I don't wanna put any weird pictures in your head...just go ask your mom, I'm sure she'd tell you better than I could.

Congrats on your new baby brother or sister though :)
dilated means the cervix is opening and effaced means the mucus membrane over the uterus is thinning.
I would tell you, but I'm not your mother...you should ask her. Do it in a direct and honest way, and she will most likely be willing to discuss it with you.
either ask you mom or look it up online. Because they are kinda gross and i only know what dialated is.( i am not pregnant i just know one of the meanings)
Ok you should really talkj to your mom about this and have her explain it to you. But I will answer your question anyway, dilated means that her pelvic has opened up and the baby will be here soon. For some women this takes 1 hour to 36 hours from the first dilation to the birth of the baby.
The cervix is what surrounds the baby and keeps it warm and healthy until it is ready to come out. Effaced is the word used to talk about how thick the lining of that cervix is...when it is close to time for the baby to come, the lining gets thinner which is called effacement...so, if she's 50% effaced, her lining around the baby is thinned half way ready for the baby to come out. The cervix has to open for the baby to come out and that hole reaches 10 cm wide. This is called dilation--when your mom is dialted to 10 cm, the baby will come out.

just had a baby myself
Maybe you should ask your mom.

However, in case you are embarrassed or wont for some other reason.... In layman's terms:

Dialated: The hole the baby comes out is getting bigger.

Effaced: The thickness of the exit hole is thinning.
it means how ready her body is to have the baby. If she's having the baby naturally, her body needs to be ready to pass the baby. Medically speaking, it refers to how large her birth canal is. The numbers go from 1 to 10, with 10 being ready for the baby to go. It's also kind of a 'guage' that the dr. uses to know how close the baby is to being born. When mom is dialated to 10, she is ready to have the baby, and the baby is likely headed out at that time.
your baby brother or sister is face down & ready t o be born
I think that this question is better asked by your parents that by some strangers online. Go and ask mom and dad
WELL HELLO,SURPRISED YOUR INTERSTED BUT THE WORD DILATED MEANS THE OPENING FOR THE BABY TO ENTER THE WORLD WILL BE OPENING AND THEN TIME TO PUSH
