smoking in pregnancy?

My friend smoked all through her pregnany. Now, what i don't get is that, now the baby is here, she rushes around smoking outside and causing a big fuss if anyone smokes near it (which is right), yet she was prepared to smoke like a chimmney WHEN IT WAS IN HER???? Don't understand. can anyone explain the logic?

Answers:
No there is no logic. She was too weak & selfish to stop smoking when she was pregnant & now the baby is here she's putting on a big show about smoking around her baby. She obviously never considered/understood the risks of smoking in pregnancy and didn't stop, now she finds it perfectly acceptable to tell other people off for their lesser evil! Smoking in pregnancy increases the risk of cot death considerable, as does second hand smoke (pregnacy or post pregnancy). She's probably totally clueless to the fact that even if she's not smoking around her baby she is still exposing the little one to secondhand smoke as the toxins & chemicals cling to her body - that's why smokers are advised NEVER to bedshare, it's not because they may smoke in bed, it's because the chemicals etc are on their clothes, skin & breath. She's doing the right thing not smoking around her baby, but it's a compromise, really she should be trying to stop. You should encourage her to stop by providing her with information & support. Perhaps the risk to the baby seems more real now the baby is actually here? Has she considered the fact that her baby also needs a healthy mum? Not one who is increasing her risk of cancers, heart attacks & strokes?

BTW saw your other q about UK hospitals. You don't need to deliver in hospital. Have you considered a homebirth? You are legally entitled to one. Visit www.homebirth.org.uk for info & there's a birthchoiceUK website too that gives good stats on specific hospitals (sorry for hyjacking this q, but the answers you got were truely pityful!)
The effects of second hand smoke are far more dangerous then the effects of smoking during pregnancy.
