How accurate are ultrasounds at determining due date?

Also, what is the optimum time to get an ultrasound when trying to determine due date? The earlier the better?

Answers:
I have heard that early ultrasounds 8-10wks are best for determining gestational age. Because of the fact that some women are irregular or just aren't keeping track of thier periods. The further along you are the less accurate they are though for determining conception date.

Other Answers:
NOT - go by the date of conception... if you don't know that, then take EVERYTHING concerning due date with a grain of salt. And don't let them tell you what to do.

And read EVERYTHING on this sites forum...

I think they are pretty accurate. Alot of women have no idea when the time of conception was. So when you have an ultrasound they go by the size of the baby, the size of the uterus etc. (PLUS they are the experts!) They know what they are doing! it depends on when you get it. My son was big, so it calculated him being a few weeks early. My opinion, be prepared a few weeks in advance anyway...you never know when they'll be ready.

They can't be too accurate. My doctor measured my baby three times in a row. Each measurement showed me a day or two farther along. The final measurement was impossible, because my husband had been away for a while.

I think if you have several u/s a couple of months apart, the dating could be a little more accurate.
