"Must-Have" Baby Shower Requests?

Could you provide me with some suggestions of "must-have" items to request as gifts at a baby shower. For example, are there things that you may have wished you had asked for, but didn't. Later you may have kicked yourself for not thinking of it?
Thanks!

Answers:
We have two boys (2 yrs and 4 1/2 months). We remember walking through Babies R Us before our first was born feeling overwhelmed by all the stuff. We fell into the trap of getting more than necessary. It gave us the chance to see what works and what doesn't, though.

Toys:

Fisher Price Jumperoo. It's bulky, but it allows the child to jump without having to hang it in the doorway. Our boys both love(d) it.

Play mat with hanging toys. It's great entertainment for the baby when they're little.

Exersaucer. Perfect place to put the child when they're tired of laying down.

Baby Swing. We have the Fisher Price Aquarium swing. It's perfect for the baby, especially when he/she is tired.

Health Supplies:

Diapers. We prefer Pampers over Huggies. Huggies always leaked for our kids. See what works best for you, though.
Wipes. Costco sells Kirkland brand wipes. The nice thing about those is it comes in a disposable plastic bag. You don't have to buy refills and put them in the little plastic container like you have to with other wipes. They're awesome!
Tylenol Infant Drops
Infant Motrin
Baby Orajel
Syringe
Humidifier
Thermometer (Digital Rectal if possible. They're the most accurate)
Tooth/Gum Cleanser and finger brush
Desitin
Baby Lotion
Baby Powder
Bottles. We bought Dr. Browns, which helps the air escape before the child drinks from it, reducing the potential for colic.
Sipper Cups.
Bottle Brush. Evenflo makes THE BEST bottle brush. It's a crank type style, so when you put it in the bottle, you crank it around and the bottle is clean. It's far better than any bottle brush I've used.

Clothes/Blankets:

Onesies
Sleepers
Bags (these are perfect for when the baby is really little and constantly needs a diaper change).
Burp Cloths
Bibs
A couple cute outfits for outings/pictures
Socks/Booties
Blanket. Our boys are like Linus from the Peanuts cartoons. They both love their blankets. You might want to get a few blankets, but designate one in particular to take on outings and put him/her to bed with. It's quite a comfort to them.

Misc:

Stroller. Get a good one that's easy to push and fold up.
Pack And Play (fold up playpen).
Bathtub
Carseat (A carrier type and a separate forward facing if possible. You'll need the forward facing at about one year).
Cradle and/or Crib.

Videos:

Baby Einstein. Our boys both started enjoying these videos at about three months of age. For some reason, it captivates them and gives you a good half hour break when needed.

I've pretty much exhausted my list of essentials. We have much more than what's listed, but these are the things I would keep if we got rid of the other stuff. Hope that helps.

Other Answers:
a thermometer to use in the ear, a nursery monitor even if the house is small, lots of diapers (i actually asked for these, in different sizes, and they lasted for about 6 months. if the size was wrong i just brought em back to walmart and exchanged em for the right size), baby blankets, and wipes. Another idea is to ask them to buy size specific clothes, i.e. a newborn is not likely to be outside the house very much at first, so all those newborn clothes go to waste. Ask a couple of people to get the different sizes, 3 month, 6 month, etc. That'll keep ya from having to buy them yourself in the future. Hope this helps.
more t-shirts booties, and hats for little ear protection in the cold and wind...also i wish i had asked for a thermometer, and baby tylenol and a first aid kit,,,,,oh and dont forget a digital camera or video cam (from the more monetarily developed guestlist-grandparents lol...) tell em its to film the birth and first steps etc... or if u have these, just ask for the tapes....also a sound of a heart beat bear is good for baby sleeping too,,, tapes of childrens songs,,, etc....
Playtex breast pump, baby blankets, nursing bra
Extra crib sheets, or mats to put over the crib sheet that can be changed often.

Also, how about the gift of a night of babysitting (especially overnight) so mom and dad can have a date, and a full night's sleep. Grandma's are great for this gift, and usually love having the little ones around for a whole night. My mom did this for me regularly (read, almost weekly) when my boys were young. It was the greatest!!

Books! Read to your baby from DAY 1.
Lots and lots of diapers.LOL
