should the baby still remain active during labour?
Answers:
as long as the heart rate stays up there is no concern.
It normally does drop a little during contractions, but it should always go back to "normal".
low heart rate is a sign that the baby is in distress
Other Answers:
you won't be aware of the baby in the same way as you will be focussed on your contractions. The midwife or whoever is with you will be monitoring both you and the baby so there's nothing to worry about.
the only thing you should be feeling is pain, sad as that sounds... the baby probably wont move too much after your water breaks, but they put monitors on your belly, one for the baby's heart rate, and one for contractions.
as long as the baby's heart rate stay pretty steady, and your temp., they don't worry about him too much because your body is still breathing for him. things will be fine.
