What are some Don'ts that parents shouldn't do with a child that has a speech disorder?
Answers:
I think the obvious is to NEVER make fun of the child's speech pattern, e.g., repeating over and over the sounds as funny as it can be. I also think the parent should make sure they take the extra time to understand the child's speech, even asking them to repeat it over again, before they try and correct the speech. Over correction gives the child a sense of failure. I strongly recommend the parent start out a conversation with the child making sure it is the parent who has the inability to understand rather than the child's inability to communicate.
Make fun of the child. Mimic child. Punish the child.
